\well I like it but it is VERY hard work and I am only a student!

I read that this morning and agreed with every word. I don't "love kids" but I enjoy interacting with people of any age. I enjoy my subject, particularly up to A level, and I enjoy learning new things. I like sharing my subject with other people and helping them to understand it and ideally enjoy it.
I did feel like a bit of an oddity on my PGCE when everyone else seemed to want to teach for the love of the kids.

The only two good things about teaching these days are July & August.

I think my "name" enjoy august gives it away a bit! I totally agree with posts 4 and 6, but would probably put them in this order summer hols may half term easter oct half term feb half term/christmas the reason being I like to get outdoors, so the winter breaks are not so much fun. I quite like the bit between Friday 3pm and Monday 8.30 am. However the closer it gets to Monday the less I like it. I hate marking, preparing stuff, paperwork, meetings, admin, data analysis, parents evenings, inset days, and anything else that wastes my time. Oh, and all SMT most of the time. I still like most of the kids and my subject....but the balance of the bits I like and the crap mentioned above is getting too far the wrong way.

Interesting blog entry, oldandrew. Were these the Middle Ages, you would surely perish at the stake for such dangerous heresy.
You'll be wanting the children to remeber facts next, and to arrive in your classes equipped and socialized. You are completely out of step with the spirit of our times. Remember that all new educational initiatives achieve the opposite of what they herald (cf. A Curriculum for Excellence et al.)

The one that sticks in my mind is "Excellence For All", coined by somebody who clearly didn't know what "excellence" actually means.

petekeefe - July is not a good month for teachers - school is in session till the 3rd week, exams are long since gone and teachers are hot and knackered, many marking time till the holidays.
Parents are taking kids out on holiday left right and centre and departments are having 'activity trips' so any teaching is a bloody nightmare.
Give me September over July any time.
