If you are an AST, or in the process of becoming one, or thinking of becoming one, how much teaching experience do you have?

    Thanks,

    H.

I'm currently in the process of applying for AST status and in my 4th year of teaching.

That's great! My director of studies keeps telling me I should be thinking about applying for AST in the near future, but all the AST's I've met have about 25 years teaching experience.

    Good luck

I had 10 years... But I started teaching before ASTs existed so spent 6 years as a 2ic...

Go for it as soon as you can hit all the criteria. You have to have three years worth of exam results, so at least 3.

I am coming to the end of my NQT year (Easter) and then start fast track. I hope to be in an advanced skills position within 4 years. I know 3 teachers who are in their 4th yr and ast.

wibble73, where do you get you information from?

'You have to have three years worth of exam results, so at least 3.'

I know of several AST's with just over 2 years experience!

Okay that was just me making an assumption...

You have to be able to show consistently excellent results. Given that you'll need two years to produce a set of GCSE results...

Am very very impressed for those who've been able to do it two years...

However long you've been teaching evidence is only admissible from the previous three years.

I'm also very impressed with teachers who've done it with 2 years experience. I've got 1 year as a GTP and one full year as NQT (and one term from this year - not currently working). I don't feel that I've had enough experience. I don't think that even at the end of next year I'll have strong enough evidence, even if I am meeting the standards - I'm going for threshold at the end of next year and I'm not 100% certain that I'll have the evidence for that (although if the same criteria as to what counts as evidence for QTS standard apply, then I should be ok).
