I have a Polish pupil joined the class in year 9 and he speaks almost no English at all.

I have tied using and English to Polish transator on the internet to translate handouts etc and they do help a smidge, but it seems the translation is not always effective or accurate.

Can anyone advise me how i might find out which translation sites are the best for me to use and does anyone know whether using such a translator is a lost cause.

I know nothing of polish but I know that there are many dialects in some languages and i guess it really isnt that straightforward.

Any advice anyone can give me will be very much appreciaed.

    Thanks

    Hi,

Unfortunately I don't know any translators Sad, but just to let you know - Polish language does not have any dialects that would be used predominantly by any group of people. Basically people using dialects can all speak standard Polish, so this is not the case. The problem is rather with homonymes or idioms that might be wrongly translated. In case of emergency Smile I would use rather an online dictionary www.ling.pl that a translator.

Try these websites to encourage your student to learn some English:

I've just realised that the pupil is in year 9 not 9 years old, so the flashcards will be rather too childlish.

Maybe try the website with various glossaries

    http://www.angielski.nauczaj.com/slownictwo.php

and online quizes and tests (after some time :))

    Good luck

Hi, this is a bit late i know but for others who might have a similar problem. I'm not sure if your school has any specific budget for it but i've actually used human translators before for this sort of thing and it's generally been quick and pretty cheap (maybe £5 or so for a quiz). We've had more polish students recently so ive been using it quite regularly. I've used a few but the most recent one, www.polishenglishtranslators.com was the fastest (normally within 2 days). Good luck!

Just found this thread, thanks for all the advice. Have a girl started at our school (year 8) two or three weeks ago and I've been trying to use Google translate to help, but really unsure as to whether it is really helping. I have bought a phrase book to try and help with just saying good morning and things like that. I teach science and I've been told she is bright which I don't doubt but the girl hasn't spoken a word of English in my class since she started.

I tried speaking to the head of MFL to see if anyone else at the school spoke Polish (to check the stuff I was translating), but was told nobody does. I was told to use lots of pictures though, which I'm trying.

If there is anymore advice/resources please keep them coming! Going to have a look at the webby given above. Good luck to anyone else with this 'challenge'!

    Cheers

    Hi,

It seems that you are too ambitious as you want to make him do the same handouts as the normal mainstream children. It is not feasible at this stage when an EAL  child has no English and you do not have any Polish speaker LA in your lesson. Just highlight few important words of your worksheet, ask him/her use Eng-Polish dictionary and write the meanings of the words. You should give him a topic related differentiated worksheet, may be at primary level. What subject is it and what topic are you teaching? You are lucky in a way that he is educated in his home language. So he has got all four skills in his own language. Let me know, I hope, I will be able to give some suggestions.

At this stage, please do not use a big chunk of text to translate. For adults, it may be feasible but not for school children. It is quite frustrating.

Yes..I agree with what the other members are saying. You should encourage the child in learning English language. As the child is only 9 years old, there is ample scope for him. Another good reason might be that having good knowledge of English would help him to explore new areas and be comfortable while traveling new countries and exploring information in the web. Many links have already been suggested by my brothers, I will add one more link to it because the site is good for a newbie as it does not goes too deep but start slowly and makes English learning fun. Try it out:-
