ll 30 pupils in a class took part in a sponsored spell to raise money for charity. The pupils were expected to get an average of 18 spellings correct each. The average amount of sponsorship was 20 pence for each correct spelling.

To do this in 30 seconds, which is approximately what you have after the first reading on the qts numeracy test.

    30 x 18 x 20 pence

rub out the two zeros to get it in £'s (you are dividing by 100)

    3 x 18 x 2  or  3 x 2 x 18 which is the same.

    = 6 x 18   pounds

    six 10s are 60, 6 eights are 48.  60 + 40 =£108

The maths is not hard. It's doing it within the time frames that is. Unless you have some short cuts up your sleeves.

It's not worth writing reams on this. The numeracy test is generally not that difficult, if at this point you are still struggling you are either going in completely unprepared or should consider your choice to be teacher. Basic numeracy is essential, and that's essentially what the test covers, I'm sorry but its not a difficult exam and it shouldn't be removed, its just a check and balance.
