Hi I have recently seen two job adverts for 2 British schools in Bahrain and Qatar and I have been trying to do some reserach on both places. They seem to be 2 good places to work. I found an article that said that residents in these countries can be very racist towards people of Indian/ Pakistani origin. I am a British national and have lived in Britain all my life and my wife is a British national who was born in Pakistan. I understand racisim can exist anywhere but from what I hear in those particular countries it is very unpleasant. Could somebody please shed some light on this particular issue?

I think you'll find that the racism is directed towards pakistani's with the low paid jobs not people like you!

You will never meet any serious racism...until you live in the Gulf.  What problems you think you have had in the good old UK will pale into insignificance when you meet the Gulf Arabs.

Sorry oldgit, I totally misread your post.

I was only in Qatar for one term.  A group of us went to have our blood tests and chest x-rays.  One of our group was from Nepal and he was made to go to the back of a long queue to wait (for about 2 hours) whilst the rest of us were sheperded to the front of the queue.  Our objections fell upon deaf ears.

I really cannot comment about Bahrain, as I have never been there.

Qatar, however, has to be one of the most racist places on Earth. Many workers from Nepal and Pakistan are treated appallingly, do dirty and dangerous jobs, live in disgusting conditions and do not even get paid on time. Sometimes their salaries are a month or even two months late. (The Qu'ran says that you have to pay your worker "before his sweat is dry", but it seems that many Qataris do not bother to read the Qu'ran.) As an expat "western" teacher, there is not much that you can do about it. That does not mean that we should do nothing at all.

During the two years Mrs Hippo and I were in Doha, I always got out of my car and made an effort to talk to the guy (usually from Nepal or Pakistan) who was filling the tank. Then I made sure that I gave him a tip. I am also glad to say that our church provided free English lessons for the Nepalese and Pakistani labourers who also came to the church. Well, it's not much, but it is better than nothing.

Yes, I agree about Qatar but it is not only from some of the locals (many are not at all racist) but also from many of the British expats there (and others).

If racism bothers you do not come to the middle east. Simple.
