    Dear Clare

I and a group of concerned parents and teachers, like many others, are seeking to set up their own school. We actually have a launch date for the project with the aim to raise public awareness of what we are doing and to gather more like minded people. What I would like to know is does your team have a group of people who go out to events like this to raise awareness of the Governance of schools and to encourage parents and other members of the public to become school governors with a display stand and information to give away?

I strongly suspect that would be your group's job to do, Dawn.

Not going to be easy, is it?

    ....like many others, ....

Can you give a link to the source to the data that supports this statement? How many people are "many others"? Media reports I have read suggest that very few people want to start their own school.

It would be useful for all of us to be able to put the number of parents and teachers that want to start their own school into the context of the total number of parents and teachers in England. The compulsory school-age pupil numbers are around 6,000,000. I don't know how many individual parents that is - they all had two but most parents will have more than one child let's say that there are 7 - 8 milion parents of school age children. What percentage of them are trying to start their own school? Similarly there are around 500,000 teachers in England (plus another 150,000+ TAs etc). I'd be interested to know what percentage of those are trying to start their own school.

    Hi Dawn

The NGA does have a display stand and leaflets both about the NGA and good governance. Although we do attend conferences we do not usually attend events relating to a single institution. I'm also not really clear how this fits with your event. At this stage the important thing for your project is to raise awareness of your plans and raise support for them - persuading people to become governors is a secondary issue. It is also the case that parents and members of the public can already become school governors, they do not need to wait for a new school and the NGA, local authorities and the School Governors One Stop Shop already promote and raise awareness of governance. The NGA may be able to supply some materials for your event; such requests are dealt with by the NGA office who can be contacted via email at governorhq@nga.org.uk
