     Hi,

I'm an English grad with good A levels and degree, and have been working as a TA for a few years in a PMLD school, an EBD school and a primary and a secondary school. I've had a wide range of experience and am currently working with EAL students.

People keep telling me that I should do a PGCE and I want to, because I feel very understimulated as a TA, and would like to offer more.

However, I do not have maths GCSE. Despite being talented in English and my subject knowledge being excellent, I cannot teach because of my low ability in Maths. I got a G grade at school, I retook it 2 years ago, got an E, then re-took maths again, and just gave up the course as I was so out of my depth. Obviously, I now have to do the higher tier for a C, and I am utterly hopeless with some of the concepts on the later modules. It's all Greek to me! I retain nothing, and moreover, hate maths with a passion!

I've noticed that my local PGCE provider offers a maths test in lieu of GCSE. I was wondering how hard this might be. I passed my adult numeracy certificate. My basic maths is okay, but I am unable to do all of this surds stuff on the GCSE paper. I'm worried that I won't be preapared for the test and I'll get my hopes up for nothing.

Failing this, is there ANY way to get around the GCSE maths part of training? I don't mind doing a test, but no way am I going through that damn GCSE course a fourth time! I couldn't take it! :)

Your best bet is to contact the training provider and ask about the test they offer.

Out of interest, how did you manage to get onto a degree course without maths GCSE?

If you really want to teach, I'd persevere.  You could get a tutor.  I read from your post on the student teachers forum that you work in a school, so why not make friends with the maths department?  You would need to pass a skills test in numeracy to gain a PGCE so you would need to address your problems with maths anyway.

It wont be any easier than what it takes to get a gcse C. I got a D at GCSE and had to take equivilancy tests and it was hard but with lots of hard work I passed it.

I'm not inumerate per se, I just really struggle with concepts like surds and algebra. What is the equivalency test like? What topics do you have to study? Do you get to know what's in the paper first?

Primary school teachers are expected to demonstrate a sound, basic knowledge of all the subjects in the curriculum for key stages 1 and 2. Therefore you will need to be able to demonstrate your competence in mathematics.

It would be a good idea to talk to your local PGCE provider for advice on the format of the tests. You can also ask them for a list of revision books and they may provide you with sample past papers. The tests need to be at the same level as the GCSE but the format may suit you better. You can find details of PGCE providers on the TDA website

When you have gained your maths qualification, you will be in a good position to gain a place on the course because of your extensive experience.

Good luck with the test and I hope this information has helped.
