Many posters seem surprised when I have suggested that members of a fascist political party with racist polices should not be allowed to teach children.

It is my view that a teacher should be ‘signed up’ to the notion of equality between different ethnic groups. Membership of a party such as the BNP makes this impossible, in my opinion.

    What do you think?

Disagree completely. Providing it doeesn't affect their teaching then teachers should be free to do whatever they wish in their own time (obviously not illegal stuff like killing people etc!).

I've no truck wity the BNP but where would you stop/
The SWP, the CPGB membership of the Moslem Association GB...
If the part is legal then so be it anyone is free to join.
They'd do well to keep it qiet though.
Time was when we had a rule that we didn't discuss either politics or religion in the staff room. Not saying we shouldn't on here where we are anonymous, but at work.......

    TIL,
"Providing it doeesn't affect their teaching then teachers should be free to do whatever they wish"

I would suggest that membership of the BNP would, by defintion, affect one's teaching. It's a bit difficult to have equal expectations of all pupils if one is a racist, no?

    Leval,
"The SWP, the CPGB membership of the Moslem Association GB."

If the SWP etc. were racist, I'd agree, but they are not.

BNP are a legitimate political party. I will support your motion providing teachers are banned from joining any political party. Why should one be singled out above another?

"Why should one party be singled out above another?"

Because they are racists, and membership of the BNP is confirmation of ones racism - and therefore, by defintion, makes you a poor teacher (in terms of having equal expectations regardless of race)
