    Hi Guys

    Ok whats your opinion?

I have long felt that Mp3 players are a good thing and have operated a one ear in policy. I have recently been told that this must stop, i.e. students working and listening to Mp3s - as it is against school rules and the maths department have complained. I have tried to google any research to back up my own feeling that it helps students concentrate and even prevents some disruption. I want to change this policy. Any ideas where I can get some research to back this assumption up?

music absolutely essential to many students while they work!  I think it may well have something to do with the old right brain-left brain thing; listening to music helps 'tune out' the left brain, with all its logical step-by-step analytical processes and also lessens the need for conversation, which stops you falling into that lovely sense of complete absorption while you work.

Why on earth are the Maths dept complaining?  If they don't want mp3s in their lessons, they just say no!   That shouln't be your problem.

BTW, I only allow mp3s for Y10 and above ... not sure why, maybe I should rethink even that....

We have a similar school policy of no MP3's, ipods etc but the Head decided that they were ok for Art exams only, as they help student to focus!! My thought was what about the lessons???

We're allowed the radio and if there's any arguments on channel......it get's turned to classic FM, which I'm all for anyway but that threat tends to stop any arguing over stations!

I agree with the no MP3 players. You must look at the whole school issue where for other subjects this is not possible, and can cause troubles in other departments.

Usually for art only when do exams.

I just want to point out that art exams are covered by the same exam rules as all other exams ()externally set regulations, not school based) and these prohibit the use of music players among other things. Now, you might get away with it (many do) but you are risking having the whole exam disqualified by allowing MP3 players in external exams.

I have always allowed music to be played for gcse and a level students, untill my new head walked into my room and took me out of the room and gave me a bo****king for it. I was told i have extremely bad habits and poor teaching skills and ever since i have been bullied from her and feel very Inadequate. I have spoken to many schools and they are happy with music in art as it is proven to help concentration. I still believe it helps particularly low ability students to relax and concentrate.

I agree that listening to music is benificial and the students do focus when creating their art but you are absolutly not allowed mp3 players, the radio on or similar in the actual art exam! You should be abidig by QCA guidelines

True, but to be honest, I am mixed on mp3 for art exams. I have never been the one to decide on this anyway, just gone with what was decided by others.

Sometimes though for lesson, the radio on for A level is ok, not sure about GCSE.

It's got to depend on your groups, hasn't it?  I admit, had not realised that mp3s were banned in exams... lah lah lah lah *wanders off with fingers in ears*
