They won't pull it off, but other teams around them may implode and thereby pull it off for them.

The appointment of Shearer is typical Newcastle - let's go for the big name, doesn't matter about experience or record.

Newcastle were dire at the weekend, and this was supposed to be the main 'shearer effect' game - Chelsea themselves were worried they may be steamrolled for no other reason than Shearer being in charge of his first game.

About 20/80 against them staying up, methinks.

I despair of Newcastle, I really do. They shoot themselves in the foot every time, and I speak as a fan of nearly 40 years standing. I love Alan Shearer to bits, but seriously WTF????!

TBH, I think relegation would be the reality check this club desperately needs. Go down, clear out the dead wood - the hangers-on, the journeymen, the gutless paycheck players and the corporate numpties - and get a decent, experienced manager in to rebuild the squad.

A season or two in The Championship would do them a world of good.

And yes, it will break my heart, but it is necessary.

Getting Shearer in short term was a good thing that needed to be done. Experience is no guarantee of success, and sometimes an inexperienced club man like Shearer can have the required boost - Trevor Brooking came in for us and improved results (even though it wasn't quite enough).

If not Shearer though, who else? I can't imagine any decent experienced manager would want to come in for the last few games with no guarantee of keeping the job - that's why they ended up with Kinnear in the first place. Something had to be done even if it doesn't work.

Relegation can indeed mean the chance of a clear out as long as you're promoted back within two years or so. For established Prem clubs like Newcastle, if that doesn't happen then the chances of doing a Charlton, Southampton, Forest, Sheff Wed etc is likely.

I hope they do get back, as from a neutral standing I love to see derby games.

They'll worm their way out of it like they do everything else. As week as they are, they're still stronger than teams like Hull, blackburn and Stoke. And Boro obviously - they're offski! Shame.

I am not so sure this time jasmine...to be honest we are a sorry mess and playing championship football..the soul has been lost and to be honest it was lost when Sir Bobby was disgracefully sacked in 2004. I blame ashley but also sheppard must take some blame for the current situation as he appointed souness, roeder and allardyce and then promptly jumped ship (with a tidy profit in his fat pocket).

If we do not win on Saturday against pompey then we are down...we also need to beat boro and fulham at home...forget getting anything away at Liverpool and villa.

Shearer was appointed too late and it was a disgraceful PR stunt...... keegan should have not been treated like he was in September and the little scrote Wise should have been sent packing.

Anyway rant over and here's hoping for a win on Saturday.

As you say, it really does come down to the home games, which if Shearer can get them focused are winnable. Hull still don't look like picking up any points at all, so they're "there for the taking" (with the greatest of respect to Hull).

On Dennis Wise, it mystified me from the outset as to why he was appointed in the first place. He didn't exactly have the credentials of a fantastic DoF so with him clearly being the favoured staff of Ashley, it's even more apparent that the appointment of Keegan was merely to quell criticism of Ashley's reign. I'm far from Keegan's greatest fan, but if you're going to appoint the guy then don't let someone else (who's not got any kind of justifiable track record and is disliked by almost everyone) tie his hands from the off.

    Jobs for the boys.

I'm already looking at all the interesting Championship fixtures we'll be enjoying next year. It'll sort out the sheep from the goats that's for sure.

I think they will stay up, they will beat Boro and Fulham and get a point off Villa.

A few chants from similar 'great underperforming club' (Leeds) away fans that the Toon army may borrow next season:"Sh!t town, Sh!t ground, Sh!t town, Sh!t ground."

"You only come to see us, You only come to see us" or maybe for the season after:Stand up, cos you can't sit down,  Stand up, cos you can't sit down,

But when Cardiff City visit St James you’ll probably hear:

"Your grounds too big for you" (repeated endlessly)
