    Black History Month will see the launch of  our series's of African & Caribbean Arts workshops is dedicated to providing a range of educational workshops which serve to highlight the African culture, history and experience.

    All our cultural workshops are authentic and cover the disciplines of dance, drama, music and visual arts. They are designed to educate, empower and enlighten and are an exciting addition to multicultural days, exhibitions, displays, presentations and tours.

    Workshops include African Drumming Workshops, African Dance Workshops, Caperoia, Brazilian & Afro Cuban Percussion Workshops, Afro Brazilian Dance, Samba Dance Workshops, + many more!

    Our prices are very competitive and worth every penny! Prices start from as little as £225.00 per workshop and we can give you a customised quote for your project. First time customers can also save up to *£150 on dance (see below).

    Our African Arts Workshops workshops are very much in demand across the UK and it is best to book at least two to three months in advance to secure your date!

    African Drumming Workshops

    Step into the beauty of African culture for a day and experience traditional African drumming workshops and learn West African drumming rhythms and percussion music from Senegal, Gambia, Ghana, Ivory Coast. During this African drumming workshop participants will collaborate with master drummers to learn the art of African drumming leading to an uplifting and collaborative drumming performance.

    Using traditional drums from West Africa other percussion instruments, our highly skilled and experienced African Drumming facilitators lead vibrant African drumming workshops that open up amazing opportunities for individuals and groups from all backgrounds.

     

     African drumming has a great cultural heritage and is an incredibly popular workshop. Africa has a rich variety of instruments and many call it the “drum continent”.

    In this African Drumming workshop, a drum circle will be created and a master drummer will teach participants how to play the Djembe drum. Participants will also learn the significance and uses of drumming in African culture, where they are always an accompaniment for any manner of ceremony, such as births, deaths marriages etc.

    West African Drumming workshops music accompanies important life events, like marriage, childbirth, working and hunting. It has a very close relationship both with dance and with the tones and rhythmic patterns of the local language. The music is built from varied timbres playing interlocking rhythmic parts to form a polyrhythmic whole, often led by a master drummer using call and response patterns.

    During the African Drumming Workshop Using authentic handmade instruments and genuine African rhythms, pupils learn to play, in ensemble, the pulsing grooves and layered textures that are West African drumming, using Djembe, Kpanlogo, Bougourabou and Doundoun drums, as well as shakers, bells and tuned Balafon. Having mastered the technique and characteristic rhythms, pupils learn to create their own .

    African Drumming Workshops may run from 30mins to 1 hour, depending on the age group, and fit with the school timetable where possible. The time may be used in many ways; often schools want every class to have at least one contact so everyone has an opportunity to share the excitement. We also encourage a African Drumming performance towards the end of a project.

    We will provide everyone with a Djembe drum and take the participants through the African Drumming workshop, leading in to a traditional composition involving multiple parts. Everyone will be able to play an instrument. The end result is a powerful sound and highly stimulating experience

    Afro Cuban - Samba Drumming Workshops


     

    Brazil is the 5th largest country in the world and one of the most ethnically diverse. Its culture is a dynamic mix of influences from indigenous Amerindian, European, African, and the United States. The landscape ranges from the tropical rainforest of the Amazon to the hi-tech urban environment of Rio de Janiero and Sao Paulo.

    From the street carnivals of Rio, Samba drumming envelopes all your senses and the Samba orchestra comprises of participants learning a multitude of different instrument from small agogo bells to huge Surdo drums. This drumming is for marching and the combined rhythmic patterns are easy to learn. Once the rhythms are learnt, everyone will gain a great sense of achievement and be swept up by the exotic sounds of Latin America.

    The Music Samba is an expression of the dynamic culture of the people of Brazil - from its roots in Carnaval, the infectious rhythms and extrovert sounds of Samba have spread all over the world. It comprises highly syncopated interlocking rhythms over the steady throb of the surdo, with contrasting rhythmic sections, breaks, call and responses, together with students’ own composition and improvisation.

    Participants learn to play authentic Brazilian rhythms and instruments with correct technique in the dynamic Carnival style. Phonics and word-rhymes aid musical memory so multi-section pieces can be learned and performed easily, working at a level to suit the age and experience of the group. participants work with the whole range of Samba instruments, including surdo, repinique, timba, tambourine and all kinds of percussion, and will learn to master the characteristic rhythmic syncopations and grooves of Samba.

    African Dance Workshops


    A traditional dance experience not to be missed! This is a fun and lively dance workshop, which is not only enjoyable but also serves to educate participants about the meanings of the dances in the African and Caribbean societies from which they originate.

    Our African & Caribbean dance workshops are designed to introduce participants to the rich culture of the African/Caribbean people as experienced in their dance, rhythm, and music, which are vital means of expression. In this workshop, participants gain a deeper understanding of African dance culture.

    Participants will learn how to respond to the African & Caribbean rhythms that accompany the dances by clapping and singing the rhythmic patterns. Songs will be taught that accompany certain dances. To broaden their awareness, children will learn about the musical instruments and important cultural aspects of the countries where the dances originated.
