Whilst I am sure that one or two kids who are bright enough, select Diplomas rather than A Levels, it too makes me very angry that they are being peddled as some kind of equivalent qualification to them. The diplomas are the one you direct your weak kids too, who couldn't handle A Levels. To call them 'vocational' is a joke - they do very little 'doing' stuff in most of them and lots of 'talking about doing' instead. Why? Because schools don't have the facilities to deliver the practical aspects. Nor do they have the time. Nor do they have the will to track and coordinate what kids do across half a dozen schools and colleges (which Dick thought that delivering a qualification by bussing kids all over the county was a great idea)? I would love to know: a) How many kids this year went to Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, Warwick, Bath for example, to do a degree solely on the basis of having a Diploma in Muppet Studies or something similar. b) How Balls got his job. c) How he hasn't been sacked for the SATS fiasco, the Student Loans fiasco, the Diploma and Functional Skills fiascos, the ICT KS3 tests online fiasco etc etc. How can someone with so many failures under his belt keep getting away with blaming others and initiating enquiries?
