    Dear Colleagues
I wonder if you could direct me towards clear guidance on whether, if PPA is missed because the teacher is out of school on a course, they are still entitled to their PPA on another day. It is becoming impossible to cope with the swapping and changing going on.
I had one teacher off for 2 consecutive days this week on training, then she arranged with the HLTA to have her PPA on the morning she returned. Another teacher was on training on Tuesday, missed her PPA and has only requested that she stay out of assembly one day to 'catch up a little'. I want to develop a clear policy on this but fear it will just degenerate into a discussion on 'entitlement' so would like to be on a firm footing before I start.
    Would appreciate your thoughts.
    Chris

We have a clear policy in our school setting out when each classteachers PPA will be delivered to them. This is made clear at the start of each academic year, so when courses or other training or illness happens they cannot rearrange it - they must decide the course or the PPA NOT BOTH!

The only exception to this is when I cancel the PPA say due to matters of staffing cover then its 'made up' to them but at a time convenient to the school not the individual. You can also insist that some courses are attended particularly when they are related to PPA time eg KS 1 moderation meetings - Its an assessment update.

With regard to staying out of assemblies the guidance is quite clear - This is not part of direct teaching time so does not count as part of PPA release

    Hope it helps

That's very interesting, llamedos1. I am not a head, but was told very clearly by my head and the deputy of my school that legally we are still entitled to our PPA time even if on a course for it. The reason behind that stance is (apparently) that as we're working on the course, we are not getting the time for planning and preparation - therefore we should not miss out on it. We reschedule at my school so we do not miss out. I'm not complaining!

Did the person who missed 2 days for courses have PPA reduced by 40% as a result?  Surely one could argue that they should have done?

Thank you all, that is most helpful.

    An interesting point, Middlemarch!

Chris I think this is correct - they still have to have their PPA but it is reduced to reflect the teaching time that week.

As a head, I think that the teachers mentioned in the OP are so selfish! This kind of behaviour really makes me so cross!!!

In my school, teachers get there PPA on a set time each week, covered by set staff. If they are ill, out of school on a course, or off for other reasons, during this set time, then they miss their PPA this week!!

Is a head allowed to 'cancel' the PPA for cover and such like...even with the promise of making it up in the future? My understanding is that PPA is sacrosanct.

Our staff swap PPA if they have a course. They still get the same amount as a gesture of goodwill as our staff work very hard and it is seen as give and take. I was under the understanding that staff still get PPA if on courses or off ill for part of the week. It is little things like this that improve teachers wellbeing and motivation.
