    Hi

I am having to put together a supplementary studies list for GCSE and A Level Sociology, please can people recommend fiction books and movies that have sociological issues within them and that would appeal to teenagers.

I am having a complete brain block on anything.

    Thanks

Almost anything can be used, so find your favourite books and then extrapolate backwards! Examples:

    Avatar - colonialism

    Soap Operas - family relationships

Hello and OK magazine - gender and media stereotyping

    Skins - youth culture

    Being Human - deviance

Ask them what they like and how it can be used sociologically and then your job is done for you. No sweat. The WJEC A level teacher guidance actually suggests some books, films and tv programmes for the topics offered, so that may save you a few moments of struggle.

Probably slightly more political, but V for Vendetta, The Constant Gardener and Friday Night Lights. All films and books, the books come highly recommended!

What about Freakonomics for books? Someone lent it to me at work and it's very interesting (not that I necessarily agree with everything in it, but interesting nonetheless). Will make them think about Crime and Deviance and quantitative data in a different way.

The Wave is brilliant for linking to Marx's ideas of ruling via ideas instead of force. It fits in too with history A level. Really gets them thinking. The History Boys for class and Freedom Writers is good too.

Parts of Quadrophenia is great for showing the mods and rockers, although there is full frontal nudity (its 18)...guarenteed to liven up any Sociology lesson.

    Hi

Thanks for the suggestions, there are some great ones, esp for A level.

Can anyone think of more for GCSE level, as i am struggling to fill that section.

    Sally

How about the Malorie Blackman Noughts and Crosses books, they deal with all kinds of issues that are sociologically relevant, most notably racism. Animal Farm by George Orwell is a good one for power & politics at GCSE and it's really short. Junk by Melvin Burgess is good for deviance. Tv soaps are also good as many students will watch them already.
