If I'm paid £500 by a school for 5 days supply, should my take home pay be around £383?

I'm not very good with these things.

    Thanks in advance.

Sounds about right. I checked my payslips from last year. I found a similar amount taken off, and I was on a proper tax code of 647L not a BR code for this agency.

Gah!  I was hoping that I was having too much taken off.

Thank you for the reply, geffone.

Check your tax coding though. If you are on BR then they may be taking to much tax. If you have a proper code for this agency work then it probably fits.

Depends on when you reach the tax bracket to actually pay tax.

Supply being as inconstant as it is, I think it's no tax if your pay is less than a certain amount per month (can't tell you offhand) and the minute you 'hit' the 'magic number' they deduct tax. If in subsequent months your pay dips againthey then 'refund' the amount overpaid.

My tax is always all over the place as sometimes I have as little as no work in amonth to 4 weeks. Always takes a while to get the refunds but they do come thro' eventually if you have overpaid- less likely at this end of the tax year though.

If you have given the agency a P45 they will tax you correctly ... if not then you will be on emergency code tax which is always higher.  If the agency is the employer who you get majority of your work from then get your main tax transferred to them.  If you do not have a P45 then phone your local Tax Office and they will do the switch for you.

At the end of this month you need to tot up all your earnings over the past year plus any Jobseekers allowance, take away your tax allowance (which is basically you tax code with a zero on the end)and then work out 20% of the total this should be what you have paid in tax this year, if you have paid more tax than this you need to chase it up with the tax office.

But don't forget NI will be taken off as well, as well as Student Loans if you're that way inclined, so your actual total 'paid into the bank' will be different than just the 20% tax taken off, if that's what you're going on.
