I was unsuccssful in OSCA2 health and social care and have been teaching BTEC  courses for 20 years and moderating/externally verifying and now standards verifying for BTEC for over 15 years. I think the more experience you have the harder it is to pass the test because the q's are ambiguous and answers are often difficult to agree - I m questioning 5 answers and am yet to geta response to my queries and comments. And my queries aren't even about the standards of evidence- I have accepted I was too harsh, but some of their answers were just plain wrong in relation to IV and assignment design. My postal sample is nearly ready to go off! Anyone else a failure like me?

I can't say whether I will fail or not yet - I have to do the Speaking, Listening & Communication OSCA2 for Functional Skills - and so far I have disagreed with the moderation for all the sample stuff!

I feel for you as I don't think I was being unnecessarily harsh!

Hmmm.  I had to take quite a few steps backwards in order to pass the Speaking, Listening thing.  Dance helped me a lot with her tips and tricks and I realised that the criteria used were not as "heavy" as those I had always applied to Key Skills L2 (in particular).  Once I got my head round that I was OK.  Oh, and shall still continue to apply the "heavier" criteria to my students and, as OSCA2, shall encourage others to do the same!!!!  Sometimes you have to create your own set of rules I think.

I've not done Health & Social Care but I did go through OSCA2.  I agree with you about the ambiguous questions....some where really strange....

Luckily I was successful but it took (a) me and a colleague staying late one night to fill it all in on paper....(b) me and at least 2 other people reviewing the answers we'd put on paper and then (c) me actually putting the answers in to the website.

It didn't help that the sample of work we were given to look at was dated 2009 and yet it was based on a spec that wasn't available until 2010....

Yeh went through second window all but computing passed.  The computing paper was awful no evidence no identification as such and all ssv comments didn't match at all.  Been delivering and assessing btec for over ten years with no problems at all.

The answers were open to interpretation as could be yes or no and comments appeared to be ignored as such.

I would like to know if anyone else has had problems with the computing(IT) osca2 paper and have you appealed if so, have you had an outcome.  As I am preparing to appeal

I have been informed that I failed on my assessment of OSCA2 H&SC. I have emailed them and been informed that if sufficient people query the validity of the questions, then my mark can be reconsidered. I would encourage anyone who has had similar problems with this assessment to email BTECdelivery@edexcel.org.uk and also copy in complaints@edexcel.com

My email contained the following information

A1. The question asks if the assignment brief is “effective”. The SV comments show that the brief would benefit from a vocationally relevant scenario. Would this not constitute an assignment brief which lacks “effectiveness”? Since the answer to Q6 is no, and the comments state that this is due to the lack of vocational relevance, surely the answer to question A1 is also no.A5 I do not believe that the brief would “enable” the learner to achieve any more than an internet connection enables a person to learn the sum of human knowledge. Enabling is something which I believe is linked to empowering and endowing with an ability, skill and opportunity. The brief does not do this. See also question A2 where the SV states that the tasks do not give “sufficient direction” to the learnerB6 As my comments state on B4, there is a strong possibility that plagiarism has occurred. This would surely mean that the work is not authenticated.B7 I believe that the brief was of some use, though not entirely useful.B10 Bullet points are not an acceptable form of evidence. The expansion of them in the paragraphs below are. The question asks if the bullet points themselves are evidence. If an assessor had marked the bullet points as evidence and annotated them as evidence for P5, this would be incorrect since P5 asks for the learner to “explain”. The bullet points do not explainB11 Some learning has clearly taken place.C10 The comments from the SV state that “there is no indication that the language and level of the assignment brief have been considered by the IV or the Assessor. The IV of assignment brief document shows this line "is the assessment language and presentation appropriate for the level of programme?" to which the IV has ticked "yes"! C11 On the Edexcel IV form, there are several questions which are not included on the form used in the assessment materials. C12 The assignment brief states 2009 on the submission date. The work was not seen until 2010. I understand that this is a minor error in typing on the form. It is still an error and should have been corrected prior to this being issued to students and has had the effect of showing the student as being nearly a year late with their work.

C13 The dating of documents is not complete since the learner has not signed or dated this, nor has there been an issue date or hand in date shown.
