II have just found out I am pregnant (not fantastic timing I realise) and am due to start my probation year in August. With my due date being February it is unlikely that I will complete my probation year. Does anyone have any advice? I know a few people have been through this but the posts were a few years ago. Any advice re if I'll be able to complete my probation as an extension after maternity leave, maternity pay if any and when to tell my school would be greatly appreciated.

Check with the GTCS, but I'm fairly certain during one of the presentations they said pregnancy was an automatic case for deferral of induction year to next session, or switching to the 'flexible route'.

A friend of mine was in the same situtaion as you when due to start her probation.  She deferred for the year with no problems with the region she had already been allocated to.  Best wishes with everything.  p.s. think she did supply in what should have been her probationary year!

Sorry I should have made it clear that I have already spoken to the GTCS. They say that I can either start my induction year as norma, go off on maternity leave and then the time that I miss at the end will be calculated for an extension. The local authority will try to provide me with somewhere within the authority to complete this extension but probably not until next years probationers have their allocations or I can apply for deferral and it will be considered. Was really wondering if anyone has experience of how the la's deal with this because as far as the GTCS are concerned it's business as usual.

Someone I know was in the same boat. She started her year and then went off on maternity leave. This year she has been placed in the same authority for an extension to complete probation. x

Hiya, I was pregnant and due in the November after I should've started my probation yr in august.  I was trying for a baby and wasn't bothered about doing the probation year as i thought i'd do the flexible route but when i spoke to my la they advised me not to do the flexible route and to defer for a year so i'm starting my probation year this august now.

Good luck with your pregnancy and whatever you decide to do workwise!

    Ps, my la is moray.

I was in a similar situation when I did my probation. My baby was due in April so I started my probation with a view to taking mat leave and then returned the following august for an extension period to complete probation. I found my pregnancy very tiring and struggled to show my fullest potential. My extension after baby was born was a god send cause I felt like me again. Regarding mat pay I wasn't entitled to any. You need to have worked with the authority for 26 weeks continuously before the 11th week prior to due date. I did get maternity allowance from the govt though. Job wise it has all worked out for me in the end but it was tough. I would be tempted to defer so I could give it my all over a whole year! At least then you qualify atthe end of June and can go for any possible jobs. Good luck!

    Hi,

I was due to start last August but my baby was due in November. I was told if started probation i would have to source my own school for the extension period as they did not hold places anymore(told this from gtc & nlc). I deferred no problems and am due to start on Monday! I was North Lanarkshire. Good Luck
