Not being funny but why would you want to work towards a job where there is already too many out there to fill the posts available?

Don't believe Government propaganda and don't look at their adverts. Most that I have seen the kids are from stage school and half the things the so called teachers are doing would either be a breach of H&S or they would end up on disciplinary.

Because it's the job you want to do? Lots of careers are "over-subscribed".

I do it because I like working with young people (that is teenagers, not snotty nosed primary kids - yuck!) It fits in well with being a single mum (the hours are good, the holidays are a bonus) and most opf all I like the challenge and variety.

I'm hopefully going to go for the GTP (work has been bugging me to do it for the past year) but I want to want until my daughter is fully established in full time school before I embark on any more studying.  Since working here, I have seen 4 CS leave to do teacher training...ALL of them found full time jobs at the end of the course.

Well yes they would being NQTs. To be honest this so called profession has become so Business focused instead of Education focused I'm seriously thinking of moving back into the private sector at least there I'm judged on results not on cost.

Make up your mind, Timberwolf - Is it the case that there is a general shortage of jobs because unqualified people are 'taking the jobs' of qualified teachers, or is there only a shortage of jobs for more experienced teachers?

    There is without doubt a shortage of jobs for teachers, but I believe it is for a number of reasons;

    1) For many years now the government has "over-egged" any regional or short-lived shortages that so say existed.  They have encouraged too many people to take teacher training leading to a now surplus of qualified teachers looking for jobs that don't (and perhaps never did) exist.

    2) General economic climate means that most employers are looking to cut costs, schools are no exception.  There is a shortage of jobs for everyone.

    3) There is a growing trend to use cheaper and less qualified staff to take on roles previously filled by more qualified people.  This is not just in Education, another example would be replacing Police Constables with PCSOs.

Experienced and therefore more expensive teachers might find themselves disadvantaged then cheaper new entrants.

Hey guys, I appreciate the fact that there is a debate on jobs etc but can we keep this thread as what it was intended to do? "why are you a cover supervisor?"

    Thank you

I became a CS to get classroom experience and to 'test the water' to make sure that I could hack being in a classroom full of teenagers for 5 days a week.

It worked out, and I completed my GTP in June. Happy days!

No not at all L25 P above said it all really. It is just getting to the point where the attitude is cheap comes first and to some extent I can see that point of view.

However the requirements are changing again. There is a move to get rid of modular as well as coursework assessment. This means 2 years work and examinations at the end of it. This means kids will actually have to know the subject, (this is good in my view). So spoon feeding goes out the window along with not to worry you can have a second go at the exam.

Under that system the pass rates will fall drastically and it at this point that schools will start to look again. I have nothing against NQTs at all but at one point they used to be eased into roles..now they are thrown in at the deep end and expected to sink or swim.

In the last  year I have been called into short term supply where the appointed NQT in one case has walked out because of workload and in another gone on long term sick with stress, (in the first term?).

As for why are you a cover supervisor? Last year money was so tight I took two days doing this work. After around 3 lessons I was so bored I decided it was easier to teach..to be honest I could not do the work of a cover supervisor full time it would drive me nuts with boredom. Oh the first thing I was asked when I walked through the door was, am I a specialist! Yes I was covering for a teacher but the school wanted cheap!!!!
