Just trying to get a feel for things from you.

Any info about how many applicants for primary jobs that you've applied for? Or friends of yours in primary?

Do you think there are fewer or more unemployed secondary or primary, from what your friends say?

I know this is not scientific, just getting info from as many places as possible.

    Thanks.

    Dear Theo

I hope you are well, I have applied for 50 jobs since qualifying in July 11.

One school, I applied for had over 75 applicants in the 1st week!

I do know a HT who told me that normally a post at her school would attract 4 or so candidates, and a pt job that was teaching numeracy and lit only had 30 applicants, some with masters!

I am applying for TA jobs at the mo, if I'm not successful I give up!

15 applications  over last year - including a dream job. 3 interviews - got offered supply work at one of the schools but no job. Feedback was - no recent experience in that age group so could not jump in. How do I get recent experience without getting a job? And my 5 years experience in that age group did not seem to count.

    Still it's a new year!

    It's tough!

But getting 3 interviews is good going - well done!

Any idea how many applications they had?

    Volunteering sometimes works out.

    Best wishes!

Me and my friends have found that there tend to be between 70 and 200 applicants for Primary jobs(in cases where we have been told this information). Indeed the last position I had an unsuccessful interview for had 190 applicants for one position! The numbers are higher in the city and seem to get a bit lower the more rural/part time the position is. We are in the South West.

Approx 35 applications, 3 interviews. Qualified July 2011. Initially some jobs were attracting 150 applicants. At school visits I am meeting the same people over and over again; a mix of NQT's and 'return-to work-after-kids' teachers.

I am in the SW and this seems to be the worst year for jobs in a long time!

Currently getting lots of supply work - hurrah!

Been out of schools for a while due to my hand surgery, but in my area there have been a few more posts being advertised this last term than is usual. I have heard 'on the grapevine' (main communication here) that Heads were surprised to be getting 40+ applications for posts. But this is a very rural area and transport is a problem without huge commutes, so perhaps not indicative of the rest of the country.

I'm in the North West.  Qualified as a mature student, got a maternity cover which wasn't long enough to cover the whole of induction, applied for dozens of jobs (which had hundreds of applicants), eventually ran out of 'supply time' so now have more or less given up and gone back to TA work.  According to an agency I spoke to recently, this situation is becoming increasingly common.

There were very few jobs advertised for last September.  At the moment there are a handful of maternity covers, and one or two permanent jobs.  I don't know how many applicants they are getting.

The LA supply agency appears to have stopped registering anybody, maternity covers are for six months, TAs are covering PPA and more, and some female teachers seem to be delaying retirement because of the raising of the state pension age.

All in all, not a very encouraging picture.

I also know that last year's NQTs had a difficult time in the Manchester area and also in Yorkshire.
