I have been approached for supply work by PKC twice in a week. Usually its once a year. Apparently parts of Aberdeenshire are struggling as well. Oh dear. I wonder why...

Sorry to be particularly dim today, but what is PKC?

I got two missed calls from Aberdeenshire requesting me for work even though I'm supposed to be down as unavailable at the moment.

Hi Jennett, Isn't it good to know that LA's ARE struggling to get Supply?! The shoe's on the other foot now. Stuff them. If the EIS members are not going to have the foresight to see that when they voted yes to accepting the Scottish Joint Negotiating Committee's decisions on pay and conditions, which included a reduction in pay for the first 5 days of work to Point 1 on the salary scale, then they see only now that they don't have colleagues coming in to give cover when they most need it, then that IS their problem. I voted NO, when the letter came through and I was still an EIS member. Consequently, I resigned membership, writing a plucky wee letter to Ronnie at the EIS, and joined the SSTA. Now I smile when I get a call from Supply anywhere, which is happening regularly. I have long term Supply in S Lanarkshr- and before I moved from my last job in Inverclyde (which was not finished- I was just totally fed up with the school... now they can't get any Supply there in my subject....) they offerd me part time for the present job. I said I wouldn't move except for a full 1FTE. They got me it. I moved. So, as long as I can call the shots a bit more often than I get poorly treated, suits me fine. I am so glad that colleagues are waking up to the fact that they can't get cover. The Joint Neg Committee will have to change it all back, so that we don't suffer a drop in salary for the first 5 days. However (every cloud has one...) it HAS got rid of Retirees on Supply..... which totally is the way to go.....!! Watch what happens next- all these Retirees will come on to post, and moan maybe. BUt remember, guys, you did give up working as a 1fTE teacher, as you'd served your time. So make way for those who have to keep going, please!

I've been a Head Teacher for 10 years in Aberdeenshire and for the first time ever I couldn't get a supply teacher to cover a sick member of staff this week. I warned EIS members when they voted 'yes' that they weren't seeing the fact that the deal wasn't just going to affect supply staff. I wonder if there's any chance of a u-turn? New deal wrong for supply staff in so many ways!

Good for you, headie - you must be a real rarity! All the other HTs I've heard about have been bitching that supply staff don't arrive till 8.45 and I even heard of one saying a particular (very good) supply teacher won't be asked back because of this.

As for you warning EIS members, good on you! My impression is that Aberdeenshire seems to be somewhat dominated by the EIS. All the EIS missives have certainly been placed on the staffroom wall at the school where I work. The SPTA ad was left in a heap (I didn't dare stick it on the wall) until I gave it to a visiting supply teacher who had come out of the EIS.

I had three separate text messages today from my authority (in the central belt) looking for supply cover in different schools!

Hope you told them you were otherwise engaged!

Yep! I actually have a 0.6 contract and so do supply in my school. Only because I know the kids though and it isn't as stressful as supplying in other schools. Also my schools resource officer is very good with me and pays me fairly. There is no way I would go into an unfamiliar school for the pittance we are expected to work for!
