I'd like to ask what the best of the job is for you, and the worst of the job, and what do you do to make the worst of it better?

And - I'd also like to request, as this question is aimed solely at Cover Supervisors, that it does not get hijacked by disgruntled teachers of any description who hate the fact that we exist?

    Thank you

Hi, the answer is the pupils. At the best they are wonderful and make progress (I work in SLD), at worst their behaviour can sometimes be a little more than challenging! Would I change my job? NO, I love it too much.

The pupils, definitely.  Not a day goes by when one of them dmakes me properly belly laugh with their antics!

I should add my own here - the best of it is the students, and the wonderful variety of the job. No day is ever the same, and you get to know the students in all settings, which can lead to really good working relationships with them, no matter what subject you are covering.

Perhaps the worst of it is that the buck stops with us - we are there for when everyone else goes sick.... which makes it all the harder when we aren't well as if one of us goes sick our cover colleagues have a harder day, so we are more likely to try and work through illness, or feel very guilty if we don't. (That, and the infuriation of having a member in the department who regularly takes dodgy days off with no conscience!).

Sounds good getting on with the students and all that.

Pity nobody mentioned the students learning  anything so far

    The disgruntled supply teacher.

I think you will find I mention the students making progress! That surely is the same as learning?

Yesterday I had a maths lesson with a top set Y9 class - they had to do a tarsia puzzle by matching algebra equations by expanding brackets and we had a whale of a time! Within 2 mins 16 years had flashed by and it all came back to me and they all had a real sense of achievement when they finished and some even stayed behind after the home time bell to finish!

There is so much utter nonsense and morally corrupt thinking about the use of unqualified staff in our classrooms!

Let's keep it simple for those with pea-sized, corrupted brains:

Only fully qualified, GTCE registered, ideally with subject specific PGCEs and QTS should be employed as teachers in the nation's secondary schools.

The CS role is a fake job, a fake role and should never, ever have been concocted by the last government and Mr Gove should be enacting legislation to prevent any unqualified person whatever the job title from teaching in the classroom immediately!!!

One wonders how he can sleep every night with such dimwitted hypocrisy
