Is it possible to have an AS Further Maths with the following units

     FP1, FP2, D1 in Year 12

The student will also be doing for AS/A2 Maths

    C1,C2,S1 - in Year 12

    C3,C4,M1 - in Year 13

Will this combinatinon work as in the Edexcel GCE specification FP2 is listed as an A2 unit.

The reason we are delivering FP2 and not M1 is that this particular student is a Year 12 student who is doing AS Further Maths with Year 13 students.

I think this would be allowed in terms of Edexcel making the award as the spec says it can be any units in addition to FP1. Will the student cope with the calculus of FP2 though?

It's fine if you want to do that.   You won't be able to guarantee that the D1 unit ends up in FM though.

This student is an exceptional mathematician who Achieved A* in Year 10. Achieved A* in Additional Mathematics. Highly, highly motivated. I am confident of their success in FP1 and D1. If the students needs to refocus on FP2 in Year 13 then this would not be a problem as the student only wants to take FM to AS and not to A2.

If not FP2 then would you suggest any other unit. M2 is the next choice, however the student would not be doing M1 until they are in Year 13.

That should not be too much of a problem.

I use S2 in comparable circumstances.

If they are an exceptional mathematician, and want a university to take their ability seriously then I would question their decision not to do full A2 FM (Although I'm sure you already have!). Remember that Add Maths is insignificant when competing with students who did more than 12 modules to gain extra skills and qualifications.

I have students who achieved A* in year 10 who I wouldn't call exceptional mathematicians ;p

I don't know if it is the case here but I have found students who are applying for medicine in particular want three A stars so take say Maths, Biology and Chemistry at A2 even though they would have been capable of very good A2 FM Maths grades.

The Additional Mathematics course was done in Year 11 after early entry in November. We don't do AS courses in Year 10 and the AM course benefited the students as it introduced them to a number of areas of AS Level. If there was an A*A*A* grade then this student would achieve it .

I wasn't having a go at Add Maths - I think it it a great thing to do with good students.

I guess by badly made point was that they will be competing at universtiy with students who did Full A2 Further Maths and more. They won't win that competition with just AS in FM, even with Add maths, which is a lower qualification.

However, I'm sure you have already pointed this out to the student and presumably they aren't appllying for a mathematical course at uni.
