Help in becoming an Arts Technician

  • post reply

    Hi Everyone..

Not sure if anyone can help me but this is a long shot...

I really want to get a job as an arts technician I have obtained my CTLLS in lifelong learning in 2011 and my PTLLS qualification, I have taught my own two 10week Jewellery courses for an Adult Community College and I have a BA (HON) in Contemporary Crafts as well as other art and design qualifications.

Due to student numbers and finances I had to look for full time work to which I'm a trainee sales manager at present but I really want to get back into teaching/ supporting students.

If there is anyone that can offer me some advice on how I can apply for this role or know how I can train and work within this area I would be very much appreciated it.

    Many thanks,

    Crimson82

It sounds like you would be a real catch with all those qualifications! - you wouldn't need any further training as such (kilns/ specialist materials would depend on the school/ college you worked at.)  We have a part time technician (3 mornings a week) at a Secondary school, but think funding for such posts is becoming increasingly limited.

You may have more luck looking for Design Technology technician posts?  They are not usually advertised in TES, more local papers and some websites.

Thanks for responding means a lot.. starting to get fed-up! I have looked into design technology technician posts but some advertisements are asking for experience within engineering, woodwork and CAD to which I do not have. I have textiles, metalwork (jewellery), ceramics and general arts and crafts skills. This is making think I need more training within the technician role..

It's a fairly low-paid job. You sound as if you already have many admirable and useful qualifications for the role...I don't really think you need more training...it might be just that there aren't many jobs around.

I worked as an Art Technician for 3 years, which has developed into my school supporting me through GTP teachers training. From your description you look extremely qualified. You have many skills, just talk up your enthusiasm to learn more. You cant be expected to know everything. You are likely to bring new skills not present in the department. Departments may send you on further courses themselves- or have an Art teacher who can train you up using particular equipment (ie kiln loading and setting) Look at colleges and universities as well as schools. It sounds like you have the professional knowledge. Dont give up, it a lovely job

Have you tried ringing round your local secondary schools and offering your services? I know you want a paying job, but it coiuld be a way in, running workshops etc. with the skills you have.

We only have 8 hours a week technician time and when she retires we don't believe the school will pay for another.

Hope you find what you are looking for.

Hi, have you found anything yet, we recently replaced our Art technician (at a nice independent) and I filled a six month gap where we didn't have one. You are overqualified to be honest, a BA makes you appear expensive and a school will want a per meant technician many will think you will use the post as a stepping stone into teaching and be gone in a few years. If your goal is to get into teaching then perhaps you should aim for that rather than a technicians post beforehand, you sound perfectly well qualified and experienced enough to enter one of the teacher training routes available. I would not leave it too long as you may find it difficult as an NQT if you are a bit older and therefore more expensive. I hope you find the post you are looking for and if not we will certainly give you an interview but we are unlikely to have a post for at least four years.
