Art Teaching Reading List

Hi! I'm sorry if this isn't the right area to post this, but since it is dedicated to art and design, I thought it would be appropriate.

I am starting a PGCE in Art and Design in September and I would like to start getting ready and read some informative and/ or inspiring material concerning art teaching, as I am very interested in the academic side of it. I looked online and the only thing I came across that was vaguely relevant was Helen D. Hume's "Art Teacher Book of Lists", and still is not quite what I was looking for.

Has anyone got some interesting recommendations for me? From ideas for lesson planning, pedagogy, and art related reading I am up for anything! I look forward to your recommendations.

if your an arts specialist the art bit is the easy bit, its the teaching part you need to read up on, i highly recomend a book called "getting the *** to behave" a very easy to read and follow book on behaviour management.

I am also starting a PGCE Art and design secondary in September. I seem to have brought loads of teaching books already the ones I have are... - Sue Cowley- How to survive your first year in teaching and ' Getting the *** to behave' and ' Guerilla guide to teaching' -Understanding art education, Engaging reflexively with practice -Learning to teach Art and Design in secondary school, A companion to school experience. I am in the middle of reading them now but all seem useful so far, especially the behaviour management for settling my nerves about standing up in front of a class for the first time. The other 2 books have been interesting in contextualising the PGCE and teaching etc, things you need to think about.

I'm starting an Art PGCE in September this year as well. I'm currently doing PTLLS course which is a lower level course aimed at adult education but many of the theoretical aspects are similar. I've just bought "Teaching Today" by Geoff Petty which was highly recommended for both my PTLLS course and PGCE. It's a huge book, very well written and easy to read and contains a LOT of information about teaching generic theory and I think it'd be a great introduction to some of the ideas you're likely to come across on the PGCE.

Meeting the Needs of Your Most Able Pupils: Art (Gifted and Talented)

There is also one for SEN, they have a cd with them full of resources and templates.
I would suggest trying to create resources and doing your own art as time to do this will become extremely short. Starting with basic elements is a good idea, line, tone, form, colour etc.
A good example inspires the students.
Having completed my NQT year I have found less and less time, what with school incentives, to make resources or do my own artwork.
My advise (or advice, I can never get that right, although I think its the s one in this context Smile) is don't stress yourself out too much before you begin. There is plenty of time for stress on the PGCE. Good luck

I am currently on the PGCE Art and Design course and am coming to the end of my final placement. I know the position you are in because I felt exactly the same this time last year, but my biggest advice would be, do not read anything, just go out, enjoy your time, see your family, friends, everyone, go on days out, go to the gym, the cinema, the park for a walk, because when you start, all that will stop. It's a really full on, difficult course. As soon as you start you will be told specific books that you need to read and any others wont mean anything, don't buy any. Uni should send you a book list anyway. I really didn't think it would be this full on but it really is, and you really need to enjoy your free time and relax! Enjoy L
