Welcome to my free career clinic where I'm busy catching up with your many and varied queries. 

I'm happy to report that this Career Clinic, the online forum where teachers have their career questions answered, has recorded over 4,040 topics/threads (over 12,000 posts) in August 2012 since launching in September 2008. That's more than 4,040 teachers who have posted queries and received free personalised career advice. I aim to respond within a few days so keep them coming.

Please note that I can only reply once to each post in the career clinic and not via personal messages: the ethos of our free careers advice is that it is posted to the broader community and is therefore of benefit to many. 

When posting, in order to prevent a general reply, can I please also ask that you:

• check whether this has already been covered previously by using the search facility.
• tell me whether you are working in the primary, secondary or special school sectors
• what part of the country you are working in - you don't need to specify the town or location exactly
• the subject or other specialism you are interested in
• anything else that might personalise the question
• all pertinent information within a single post as I cannot provide a follow up service
• do not bump your thread as this is not fair on someone who posted before you. 'Bumps' will be removed.

About me and the clinic 

I am Professor John Howson from DataforEducation.info and former head of EDS and I am on hand to answer your career questions every week.  I believe career development is the biggest single issue facing the UK teaching profession in the 21st century.

I have experience of many different roles including comprehensive school teacher, government adviser and owner of my own business. I can advise you on how to make the best of your current situation, how to move your career forward and in which direction. Whether you are just starting out in your chosen vocation or an experienced teacher seeking new ideas, I can provide an expert opinion in my regular career clinic.

If you've a question on any career or workplace-related topic, check whether this has already been covered previously by using the search facility. If yours is a new query, make sure you include ‘Dear John’ with a short summary in the subject line of your message. Please remember to start a new topic, or your question may be missed.
