If I am on UPS 2, do I have to declare this, or can I offer to take pay cut to secure a job?

Hi John, I was made redundant two years ago and have had no permanent teaching job since. I have done supply and have been accepted for long term placements. All schools have been really pleased with my work. I was a HOY and also had TLR, and was on UPS2. However, in the current climate, schools do not want an " expereinced and expensive" teacher, they would rather have an NQT who is cheaper. I have been told this in feedback from schools where I have applied. Can I offer to take a pay cut and work for a reduced salary in order to secure a post, or must I be paid at the UPS scale? I am beginning to get a little desperate now as supply work is not as lucrative as it was. Thanks Allyson

The vast majority of state schools are still tied in to school teachers' pay and conditions and so cannot pay on less than you are entitled; a few independent schools are not and might do so, however.

I wonder why you are not applying for head of department posts where NQTs are not in competition for the vacancy. If you work in a school covered by the Pay & Conditions Document you may not move down the scale from UPS2. However, in academies, free schools and the private sector you can possibly negotiate a salary that could involve a reduction in pay but it might affect your pension.
