Dear John Secondary ICT to Essential Skills in Numeracy/ESOL

Wondering if you can assist or direct, I have worked in my first school for 3 years as a ICT Specialist teacher but do not feel the school has the capacity to offer me any real CPD unlike some mainstream subjects in my school like english/maths/science in which I see colleagues been sent to courses left right and center and promoted to positions of responsibility within the same time frame that I have been at the school. So my question is what should I do? I don't want to continue to teach my subject and then find in a few years time I am not able to move schools as no one is willing to employ me because I am on a high pay scale. I would like to become an essential skills tutor, to work in college and other training organisations, changing from teaching predominantly children to young adults and adults. I have no previous experience of teaching at Post 16 level, and have just a GCSE level qualification in Maths. Without resigning and taking a course full time, what are my options for providing a stepping stone and some retraining? All help much appreciated.

It might be worth just applying for the type of job you are interested in and seeing what happens. If you can create a credible set of reasons as to why you want to work with adults rather than school pupils that might be enough to get you at least considered and possibly shortlisted. The training could be 'on the job'. ICT in schools is in a bit of ‘nowhereland' at present while decisions are taken about the future direction of the subject. I think you should look for a post elsewhere with a TLR and some degree of responsibility. Again, if you don't get anywhere then you will have to invest in your own CPD if the school is unwilling to do so.
