    I am feeling rather unmotivated about this. I have already sorting day and night animals, found things in a dark cave, cinders reflective dress etc.
    Has anybody got any investigations or experiements related to light and dark that they could share? My school focusing heavily on SC1!

    We’ve introduced a topic about light/dark linked to safety before (be safe, be seen) by reading ‘Funnybones: The Black Cat’ by Allan Ahlberg.

    • Discuss why it’s difficult to find a white skeleton in snow/a black cat in a dark cellar.
    • We put up a wall display half white background/half black, with black & white floaty scarf or material in middle. Display white objects on white wall with title ‘white’ (or 'light') in big white cut out letters. Repeat on the black wall with black objects. Cover display before children get a chance to see. Ask for a volunteer to stand as far away from the display as possible. Turn off lights to make it as dark as possible & remove cover. What can the volunteer see? (hopefully very little). Why not?
    • Choose 2 children to put on coats (1 light coat & 1 dark). Again turn off lights. Which one can they see best? Why? Discuss bright uniforms, reflectors, cats’ eyes both natural & made etc.
    • Later swap objects & titles around to show contrast & discuss.
    • Activity Sheet – children to colour 6 coats different colours using crayons. Apply a black wash (wax resist). Which coat can they see best/least? Why? (Coat sheet - 1st word doc: http://www.tes.co.uk/resources/Resource.aspx?resourceId=4... )

    HI WE COVERED THIS TOPIC AT MY SCHOOL AND ONE OF THE EXPERIMENTS WE DID WAS, Growing grass. used a black builders tray, rectangled shaped, covered half the tray with a black bin liner, to show the importance of light, the children helped and loved this activity.

    What do you mean when you said about black wax how do you make this?
    I like the idea of the coats but could you make clear how to make the wax?

    Hello poppypig. Sorry about the confusion. The children colour the coats thickly using different coloured wax crayons. They then paint over the whole sheet using watered down black paint to form a ‘wash’. The wax crayoned coats resist the paint so the children see the paint ‘run away’ from them, filling only the background where there is no crayoning. They are left with 6 different coloured coats on a dark background. Hope this makes sense.

    hi yes just used compost and grass seeds, watered both sides, grass grows really quickly, then used the tray for smallworld added jungle animals, children loved this.

    hi I recently did light and dark as part of our senses in nursery. We used torches to see how much light shone through different fabrics, including some lack out blind material. the children then discussed which blocked the most light coming through and suggested reasons why. The black out blind matterial was then used to construct a cave in the home corner. This had rope lights in in that also ran outside so the children could compare how they shone in light and dark, illuminous stars on the ceiling. We experimented with torches. The children also had differnt coloured teddies and had to predict which would be easier to see in the dark cave.n Of course as there was no light source you could not see and and that helped them understand that it is light that helps use see and that dark is the lack of light.
    We also did the night and day animals. Discussed how people who are blind use other senses to help them and did an obsticle course in the gym where a partner had to guide their blind fold friend under a parachute, listening carefully for instructions and using touch to fel where they were going. We also played a feely game where they had to guess an object that was in a bag. This gave rise to some fantastic discriptive language. Finally we linked this with literacy and during circle time passed round and owl and made our own story.
    Hope some of this may be useful. My children certainly enjoyed it and the hands on nature of the activities meant that they grasped the concepts much easier.
    Oh we also looked at fireworks in the might sky on a dvd and did some cotton wool paint balling with florecent paint to make our own as part of our wall display.

    you could also link to people who work in the night time, and the reflective clothing they wear. get a fireman to come in or a policeman. Look at videos of night time workers, role play using the uniforms.

    Model write lists of night workers, things that help us see in the dark etc...

    We did as Cinderella and wore flourescent bands (some of us) and just coats (the rest) and stood at tope of the field and took turns to see which groupd were easiest to see on a dull winter's day.
