Anti- Bacterial Gel in schools- does anyone allow their class to use?

  • post reply

Hi, we have had a vicious circle of tummy bugs etc (and worse) recently so have been really driving the importance of correct handwashing after going to the toilet, before snack and lunch etc but some of our children are sneaky and want to get in and out as soon as possible to be first in lunch line, back to activities etc. We are trying to crack down on this and thought that using antibacterial gel (the one that doesn't need water) in addition to washing hands until things improve. These dispensers seem to be everywhere at the moment but someone has suggested that we shouldn't allow the children to use in school. Does anyone know anything about this?

    Thanks

I recently had an LEA EY inspector/advisor come into the EY unit to see what needs to improve. One of the things she spoke about were the bars of soap we had. These were a big no no. She told us to get soap dispensers. We discussed getting those fancy ones that are automatic to encourage the children to use the soap. She said we couldn't use the hand gels but we could use anti bacterial liquid soap in the dispenser. She also suggested anti bacterial wipes/sprays on tables at the end of each session to keep germs to a minimum. Hope this helps.

We also recently had some nasty bugs going around, many parents were complaining about how many children were getting sick (not that we could do much about it!) but we put in the hand gels and the kids love using them and were taught how to use them correctly abnd we have had no real problems since.

We have them for staff and I take them for kids on farm visits etc. However we were told by our H&S bod that due to flammable nature we were not to use them. A parent who was a nurse brought us holders from work to attach to our belt holders as she said that it is poisonous and shouldnt be left on the side for kids to drink and that in hospitals it has to be in dispensers or attached to staff at all times.

Does anyone know where the guidelines are about this.  We have anti-bacterial gel in school and use it when the usual soap dispensers are empty and before the site manager has had chance to refill them.

In Perth, Australia, we get the parents to donate 2x handwash each per year , though we still run out by end of year and buy our own. The dispensers are watered down by about 50% and each child is monitored to wash before eating. Yes, some avoid washing, but it's fairly obvious who avoids hand washing. I send 4 kids at a time to wash. So far we have avoided major infections. When SARS and bird flu were prevalent the gel was available but we managed to avoid all the kids using it.
