kinesthetic learner vs adhd

  • post reply
I have a child in my class who I suspect has ADD if not ADHD but his parents suggest that he is a kinesthetic learner. During whole class sessions he is very rarely able to sit still. He squirms so much it is as if he has worms! He is not learning names of shapes or recognising numbers or words. He is learning phonemes - jolly phonics approach, which would tie in with the kinesthetic idea. He has poor pencil control so finds writing very difficult and frustrating. He seems to spend much of his child initiated time rolling around on the carpet. I feel that most foundation stage learning caters for a kinesthetic style. I try not too keep children listening on the carpet for long, but it always takes time to introduce and explain new activities. I would appreciate any advice.

Sounds very much like a normal reception child to be honest. It takes far mor muscle control to sit still than it does to run around the playground. I would probably consider putting a movement coordination programme in place. If your LEA has a DCD team they could advice.

There is much much more to ADHD than squirming and the fact he hasn't learn the names of shapes or to recognise whole words and I say that as the mother of a son diagnosed with ADHD and a SENCO.
