Hi,

 I have an interview at Edge Hill for a PGCE MFL in French and Spanish, and I've also been given that task.  I am confused about what it means as well; I can only assume we are required to create something that would aid MFL teaching in some way, e.g creating a visual aid or something to use in a lesson - maybe a crossword or something??

 However, I don't know if the presentation is supposed to be about the resource or including the resource or both.

 If anyone has been to a PGCE MFL interview at Edge Hill and can help that would be great!

 ^^^Thats what I assumed aswell a crossword or visual aid but again are we meant to actually use that and give a 'mock' lesson or just explain to the panel how we would use such a resource.

 I wonder if we emailed them just to clarify would be that be appropriate ?

eb, what have you been told exactly? Abbas- you've been asked to actually create the resource. It seems to me you both need to create the task and talk about it- why you think it's suitable for a KS4 MFL lesson.

A visual or crossword isn't enough. KS4 means something for a year 10 or 11 lesson- so they will be one or two years away from sitting their GCSE language exam.

Is that all you've been told- 'for a KS4 MFL lesson'? No topic/grammar to be covered?

It seems to me they are looking for you to show some awareness of the level you are supposed to be aiming at in KS4 and the kind of learning resource that would appeal to 14/15/16 year olds, as opposed to 11/12/13 year olds.

First, you need to work out what you want them to learn. Topic vocabulary? A grammar point? An enhancement of their reading/writing skills?

Topic vocabulary- choose a topic from the GCSE syllabus. You will find these online- AQA and Edexcel websites, for example, are easy to find. You could make a powerpoint, or a reading resource that you have exploited, with differentiated exs following it, from easy to more difficult. Aim to have exercises that cover the skill areas- listening, speaking, reading, writing (The listening ex can consist of the teacher reading out a transcript- you don't need a CD).

A grammar point- either a ppt or a worksheet. Start by showing them examples of the grammar point, first, before absolute clarification of the grammar point- nowadays, we ask students to identify the pattern of the grammar point first, before THEY workl out the rule, before doing examples, before producing their own examples. Have a look at some of the resources on the resource bank here for ideas how to practise grammar/make a good worksheet- just don't copy the resource- you may well be caught out.

 Enhancing a MFL skill- again. pick a GCSE topic, find or create a good text. You could look at realia. I would go straight to making a 'good' one- I know it's good if it has the following:

-covering of the tenses

-justified opinions

-all of the attributes summed up by the 'avocado' acronymn-

a- adjectives

v- verbs (past, present, future, imperfect) 

o- opinions (justified)

c- connectives

a- adverbs

d- description

o- originality

 That should give you some ideas.

I have decided to do is a Power Point Presentation with my basic theme being SPORTS and LEISURE. What Ive decided to do is have a picture of a sport (a football or cricket bat etc) and let the children guess the word in URDU which builds up thier vocabulary. The word will then fly up onto the screen underneath the relevant picture. Within that I have also added a masculine femenine theme so for example I have wrote; Ayesha football pasand karta/karti hai. The kids have to write down the word football in urdu after seeing the picture and then they must figure out wether to use the masculine or femenine word according to the name that comes before it. I dont know if thats too much or over the top maybe I should just concentrate on the vocabulary first and then in the next slide introduce the masculine feminine theme??

I would go for the vocabulary first. Then it's in your control- you don't know how good they will be /fast they will go with you expecting them to come up with the right genders. However, it is a presentation you are doing and not an actual lesson- so if you feel that would be the way you would want to go, go with it. Good luck!

 I had the interview today, glad to finally get it over and done withwas really nervous.

 I think the task had no right or wrong answer or approach it was meant to be open to interpretation to invite us to be as creative as we can, I just got too stressed out I think and started worrying too much over something that was pretty straight forward and simple.

Anyway beutiful campus, really nice UNI and all the staff were really AMAZING, they really made you feel comfortable and were really supportive.

No wonder edge hill uni has such a good reputation and good name. I would be really lucky if i got considered for a place.

Hope you got the offer. I have an interview with Edge Hill in two weeks as well. It seems to me mine is later than everyone else. That makes me a little bit nervous. Just wondering what were the written tests like?  Is there anybody doing the mandarin option?
