I am trying to work an outdoor education package into our curriculum that I can use for our year 9 pupils who are disaffected with school and the whole education thing. They will probably go on to do ASDAN or something similar in year 10, but I am looking for anything that can work with future year 9 groups. I am interested in Forest Schools, but they may be more prinary based - haven't sen much evidence of thinm in secondary education. Anyone got any ideas?
Entry level or Level 1 land based studies courses. Many exam boards do them. We are trialling Edexcel. There are plant and animal care units included.
Forest School can work with children/adults of all ages and abilities. Sara Knight has written a few books on the topic - she is very readable and has lots of practical tips and ideas, using case studies to give examples.
You just need to be clear about what it is you want to achieve from these sessions - stimulating curiousity, better behaviour, project work.... All sorts can be achieved if you give them time to explore rather than just prescribing what they have to do and when.
All the principles for early years forest school/outdoor learning work just as well for older pupils - they need time to themselves, time to reflect on experiences, time to explore.
Have fun with it!
I can agree that Forest Schools will owrk well with this age group, as there are small achievable tasks which can often offer give an immediate 'can do' satisfaction. Also what about the John Muir award? This is a more focussed activity but still looks at small, short term goals and a target to focus on which is a wild (ie outdoor) area they can look after and conserve and they get an award for meeting each challenge. The students get to decide on alot of the project themselves.
