Looking for a job share? Try this thread

  • post reply

Recently, one of my questioners asked how to find a job share partner. This set me thinking: is there a means of bringing together teachers who want to work part-time, but on their terms rather than a school's? That was how the notion of this thread came into being.

There have been various articles about job share teachers and there have even been job sharing heads. Here are the links:

Juggling teaching and parenting: Job sharing man
    The Conversation - Co-headship
Work-life balance - Less is more
    Tale of Two Misses

How will this thread help? If you are looking for a job share partner or buddy, post what you are looking for, and preface it with whether you are seeking or offering such as:

SEEKING: Primary KS2, who is willing to work Monday and Tuesday in any primary school NG1-5 postcode area.

OFFERING: NG1-5 postcode, I would be interested in a match, happy to negotiate days

You don't need to post any other details and we recommend you don’t post an email address but use our personal messaging facility to contact each other.

Once posters find a match, they should post that they are no longer looking. Also, please post when you find a job, to let us know.

This is designed as a service for users of the TES web site, but TSL is doing no more than providing a place where those looking for partners can correspond with each other. We cannot offer any guarantees about compatibility.

    Good luck!

    Dear John!

I have just emailed you with information about what I would like from a job share.

I have realised that I am SEEKING not OFFERING.

Could you please amend? - Thankyou!

Look forward to hearing from you in the future,

    Kay

My interpretation, kaydoodle, is that you are in fact offering. You are available to work those days, and are looking for someone already in post who is seeking a partner. To me, you are seeking if you are already in a school and looking for someone to take over some of your hours, effectively.

And I think the theory is that others will post and reply on this thread too. It will be interesting to see if it becomes popular.

    Dear Kay,

Congratulations on making your post and I  wish you luck in finding either a teacher with whom you can team up with in the Sheffield area and jointly apply for a job with; or, alternatively, someone who has a job already and wants to share the hours. You were right to advertise what you can OFFER - in (ie your skills and time). If this is the right match for anyone reading this thread, we recommend they contact you offline via the TES Connect personal messaging service.

The success of this thread and job share proposition really depends on enough people reading it and so bringing potential job sharers together so that they can negotiate offline. So please spread the word!!

    Good luck.

    Hi Saha,

I did exactly this last year - I decided to go part time in order to do some voluntary work etc... I work in a primary school, so it might be different in secondary, but I raised it with my head teacher around this time last year, saying I was wondering if it might be possible. She said yes, but she'd rather know sooner rather than later, and I would have to be willing to do PPA cover instead of class share to fit in with school situation etc...

So I wrote a letter to the governers citing some of the reasons I wanted to drop my hours (highlighting the need work-life balance might be a good one if your school seems reluctant), and they agreed.

I get the impression that they have to have a good reason for denying your request. Having said that, a friend of mine who's a secondary teacher was denied his request to drop his hours. His school said their kids needed the stabilty of full time teachers. I would have challenged them if I was him, but I'm not and he didn't!

The request to go part time if you don't have family commitments seems to confuse some people - several members of staff asked me if I was pregnant! They were all supportive of my decision, I think several teachers would do the same if they felt they could manage financially!

    I hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your reply. I work in a primary school as well and am completing my NQT year at the moment but really want to develop more skills which I don't feel I have the time for with this job! I was abit worried to put it through, but you've answered every doubt I had! Many thanks.
