Told i've applied too early for threshold???

  • post reply

I've submitted my form with last two years of lesson observations and two years of performance management. (from M4&M5).

I've been told that my application has been made too early to progress onto U1. I was under the impression i had to apply before the end of August?

Does anyone know what i've done wrong here?

Also, we have been told that the appraisal policy has changed as of September. Can this affect my threshold application as the deadline apparently i've now read is the end of October?

If you are currently on M6, you can apply any time up to the end of October; now is fine. My understanding is that PM for 2011-12 should be done on the old system. DId you use the official form? Although you don't have to, it is very short and tells the school the rules, so I recommend it. Use the one for teachers covered by the 2006 PM regulations; the other one is very long!.

I've done it on the other form as i wasn't sure! Will that make any difference?

I'm not quite sure what my Head will say if i'm allowed to apply at anytime. Surely this won't make any difference to the outcome of moving up? I've got all the information they need and have actually included more evidence than i actually need to have provided just to cover my back.

I'm not sure why she's said i've applied early?

Under the old system I thought you had to be on M6 for 2 years before applying for threshold.

    Not sure when it changed.

That could be why she has her opinion.

    I think that's your problem.

You can apply at any time in your M6 year (with the date extended to October to allow for PM Reviews that happen at the beginning of the school year but which are actually assessing performance in the previous year mainly ... and because the governors meet to approve pay schedules in October) but the Head needs to have access to your M5 and M6 PM Reviews, not your M4 and M5 ones.

So do i need to just add that in when i get it? We normally have our performance review in October. I don't get it as others applied at this time last year and it was all fine.

I'd say to tell the Head to keep your application as you are allowed to apply at any time in your M6 year but to adjudicate it when your October PM review is completed.

I just don't understand why there wasn't a problem when others applied this time last year!?

    When were their PM Reviews?

Perhaps some of them were in their 2nd year on M6.  Not everyone applies in the first year that they become eligible.

There have been arguments about this in this forum. It makes sense for the Head to  use the M5 and M6 reviews, but the form says "Please enclose copies of the PM Review statements that relate to the 2 years immediately prior to the date on which you submit your request." which suggests that it is those two reviews that count.

In any case, the Head has no reason to say that you appied too early - she/he can simply delay a decision until the review is completed, perhaps asking for relevant reviews to be prioritised.

BTW, when somebody has been in the same school for the previous two reviews, I can't see why thereviews need to be copied; sure the Head has access to them.

Yep, the two other people who applied had their reviews exact same time as me...the following October and they still got their confirmation that it was fine to go ahead with their application before we finished in July. They only did M6 for one year.

I have read the bit about the last two reviews and that works out as M4 and M5.

Did they get a decision on passing Threshold before or after their October M6 PM Review?
