Dinosaurs topic- geography link

  • post reply

    Hi all,

We are thinking of doing a dinosaur topic next year and have lots of ideas of how to link it to different topics.  We are struggling with how to incorporate it into  geography topic.  Any ideas??

    Thank you! :)

I've just had an idea for a link of the dinosaurs to geography (It's quite difficult for us as lots of gepgraphy topics have been taken and we haven't been left with many to play with!)

There is a book called 'Dinosaurs and all that rubbish'- could be linked to changes in physical and human features, changes in the environment, how to care for our changing environment and how it can be improved and sustained.  Do you think this is on the right tracks?

I did a dinosaur topic in Y4 and there's some good links to geography.

Where different dinosaurs have been found - map reading skills. Also, if I remember rightly, similar species are found in South America and Africa - you could discuss why and theories about the continents once being joined?

How the dinosaurs died out - one of the theories is to do with volcanoes. You could look at how they work, maybe look at pompeii as a more recent major volcanic eruption.

I think in my resources I've uploaded a dinosaurs map activity.

Good luck with what will be a fantastic topic!

We set up a link to a school on that, y'know, coastline down south where they find loads of fossils! And the children have a penpal.

Just googled schools in the area. Found a primary school in a town we had learned about and emailed asking if they wanted to be our friends! Seriously that simple. Then sent the first batch of letters off soon after. The children really love it. It's funny cos our kids have all got names like Britney-Jo and Tyler-Jayden and their penpals have all got these beautiful monikers like Coco and Clemency and all our kids are like, "'Ere, why 'ave they got such weird names?!" Big Smile Big Smile
