I am receiving my teachers' pension and pay my tax on it as PAYE, with the a Tax Coding, etc. I have been offered some tutoring work, through an tuition centre but on a self-employed basis. Is it possible to do both? Could I keep my pension as PAYE and then just be self-employed for the tuition? I had an alarming conversation with HMRC about the issue (I hope we were talking at cross purposes), which went on about forming a limited company (blah)....solicitors......accountants....etc.
There must be an easier way, as i would imagine people on here have been in the same situation. Could anyone point me in the right direction, please?
I'm self employed as a tutor, and do all my own tax returns... (so it is possible) I contacted the HMRC shortly after I started tutoring to see what I needed to do and they got me to fill in forms which exempted me from employers NI because my turnover would be very small... I think the forms were valid for 3 or so years and I think they contacted me about renewing them at the end of that time...
Beyond that, I fill in a tax return each year with the total amount I have earned tutoring (I seem to recall that I have to give the name I am trading under, but they have never questioned it when I use my own name) - and the info from my school PAYE employment (the P60), etc.... Having done it once, it's quite easy to find the equivalent details for each subsequent year...
I've usually found the HMRC quite helpful - maybe you'll get someone more reasonable if you try again?
Honestly its really - a company would be overkill in my view -I work and also tutor
I fill in one form to register - and then one for excemption of NI -
