School Experience

  • post reply

    Hi

Does anyone know if work experience needs to be in a state school, for entry to a PGCE course, or if experience in an independant school would also be acceptable.

    Thanks

    Hi

Each course provider tends to set their own classroom experience requirements so in the first instance I would recommend contacting course providers directly to discuss what is accepted.

Generally speaking it is important to gain classroom experience in a state-maintained school, or schools. Ideally this would be in the subject and/or age range you intend to teach.

The classroom environment in independent schools can differ significantly to that in a state-maintained one, so for this reason it is not necessarily deemed acceptable experience on its own. However, all experience (including that gained in independent schools) will be taken into consideration, and the more you gain the stronger your application will be.

I hope this information has helped and I wish you well for the future.
