New exam specifications

  • post reply
Just managed recently to gird my loins and grit my teeth to look at the specifications for N4, N5 and Higher English, and was overcome with a dreadful sense of deja vu. Given that they are meant to be designed to help our pupils meet the challenges of the future, their resemblance to the old Scotvec modules binned at the end of last century is depressing. A couple of other things come to mind. First is the reappearance of listening: it was part of S-Grade for a couple of years, then scrapped; it was part of Higher Still for a couple of years, then scrapped. Do these people learn nothing? Second, where does literature come into this? It looks like an optional extra to me. Third, what tw*t came up with the term "added value". Finally, at a time when our pay and conditions are being slashed, why should we accept wholly internal assessment for N4, basically doing for nothing what the SQA used to pay us to do? Those of you who remember Scotvec modules will also remember the "rigorous moderation procedures" they used, which the SQA has promised it will use too: some idiot on overnight expenses would turn up, look at your "instruments of assessment", point out that you had no question on "audience" in your close reading, put you on hold, go away, wait until you had forged some remedy, then approve you. I used to take it, but, at this stage of my career, I might be tempted to be more assertive.

Do you think that prospective employers will accept N4s , which are going to be internally assessed using instuments of assessment made up by class teachers?  I suspect not as they don't really trust us.  I agree with you.  Which *** thought all this up?  I bet they were well paid for it!!!!!

I agree with the assessment issues in National 4. Parents have already picked up on that and explained their preferred qualification would be National 5 due to the rigor of external assessment. However, I would like to think that sqa will deliver support for internal assessment similar to the NABs in place at the moment. With an sqa approved marking scheme, teachers should be safe.

Depending on what LA or school you attend, you could come out with 5,6,7,8 or 9 N5 certificates with equal ability.
