Seeking Nursery Teachers

  • post reply

    Hello.

Where are you all? Get in touch with me if you would be interested in joining a pressure group to ensure that teachers are retained in nurseries. This issue needs to be kept on the agenda, the children deserve it.

    Thanks,

    B.

    I'm a peripatetic nursery teacher.

My local authority got rid of full time nursery teachers in 2009 and replaced them with me and nine other peripatetic teachers.

I have four early years establishments assigned to me and I rotate round in 3 week blocks.

Its the cheapest form of "teacher access" out there, and is a complete an utter shambles.

    You have my full support!

I am a nursery teacher in Suffolk. In the previous year several school nurseries were shut in cost cutting measures, if other provision is provided the County do not need to. In areas with a lot of PVIs they can say parents have a choice. Child Minders, play groups, private day care etc... Why pay a teacher when a qualified level 3 could do your job? I can see the Government saying we are not cost affective. As I mentioned in another thread if a HLTA or Nursery nurse level 3 does your job when off ill, why pay us more? If all nursery practitioners are trained the same why do you need a degree?

At present Glasgow is attempting to remove all Head Teachers from Nursery Schools and replace them with CDO's ( nursery nurses )  - as a nursery teacher I am appalled. The EIS has taken the Council to court over this and we are awaiting a verdict. I do not feel hopeful. When it is cost cutting time, Early years appears to be an easy target. How short sighted !!

NL have recently anounced in their budget cut proposals that they will loose 48 nursery teachers I think that must be all of them. I'm against this as it's very short sighted. Ayrshire have already gone down this path and glasgow are hot on their heels. Money speaks!!! or rather lack of it.

The most recent report from Education Scotland(HMIE) again indicates the value of teachers in nursery. This is the third time an HMIE report has provided strong evidence to support the  case for teachers in nursery. But who cares -  no one as it is not the answer everyone wanted to hear.  Not Mike Russell, not Aileen Campbell, not the local authorities and not even the press.  So much for making sure Scotland is the best place in the world to bring up children. Maybe Tess might do a feature on this report soon.
