Curriculum for Excellence in the Nursery

  • post reply

Hello, I was just wondering how (if!) everyone is beginning to incorporate ACE into their Nursery plans. I'm starting a 0.5 at a nursery and I think bringing in ACE is going to be a big part of my job. At the last nursery I worked in I linked the capacities and early outcomes to the 3-5 guidelines but this became a bit tedious after a while. Anyone have any good ideas?

    Hi,

I have been working in nursery since qualifying last year. We are just beginning to work ACfE into our planning etc, so don't have a great deal of experience but can let you know what we are doing. The existing planning was a two year 'rolling programme', with about 8 topics covered a year. We are still using this as a base for planning etc, but are trying to make it more child-guided. The whole school has been using contextual learning for the past term, so we have had quite a lot of input on that which has been a great help. For example, the topic we have just started is Goldilocks and the 3 Bears. To introduce it to the children, a parcel was delivered to the class, containing a copy of the book and a letter from baby bear. This letter asked them to make the house corner into the three bears cottage to prepare for am visit from baby bear and his friends (the idea being that baby bear will invite the class to a teddybears picnic at the end of the topic block). We discussed what we would need to put in the house corner, where the cottage is etc. So the children are going to be involved in painting forest background etc, choosing what goes in the house and so on. It seemed to go down really well (although we only introduced it today!) and it seemed much more child led than the teaching staff turning the house corner into the 3 bears' cottage overnight. Obviously, we are not just going to have the house corner, we will have a range of other related activities going on. But as much as possible we are going to try and let it go the way children are taking it, so if they want to know more about bears we will do that, of they want to know about other forest animals we will take it that way and so on.

In terms of planning, one of the teachers in the school who is involved in taking ACfE forwards in our cluster group has made up a planning format which is being used throughout the school. Its a little hard to explain, but I would be more than willing to send you a copy if you would like?

Hope these ramblings are of some use to you!

Hi bagpussimh, my authority are setting up Early Years forums for primary and nursery staff to come together to discuss the challenges of CfE - 1 of which is planning. We are looking at whether a pro-forma for all sectors would make life easier for us all! Could I have a copy of your planner if you don't mind? My e-mail is mcmasterjean@hotmail.com. If we ever come up with anything concrete I'll share with you ....

Hope it's not too late to ask for a wee sneaky peek at your plans bagpusslmh. Am new to nursery and prior to me they had no nursery teacher so creating planning format from scratch has been a bit of a challenge to say the least.

    Thanks in advance D xx

    Hi Bagpuss

Goldilocks and the three bears sounds good. What a fab way of introducing it. Our children love that story.

We are also beginning to integrate ACfE into our planning. Would love to have a look at your planning please if thats possible?? Smile
