It's always worth noting that a "lovely pupil" for one teacher could still have done something wrong elsewhere.
However I would agree totally that it's poor etiquette not to ask permission from the class teacher before speaking to pupils in their classroom.
It always smacks of arrogance, and pompousness, when someone does that.

I have to say I don't come across many afraid children nowadays.
