20 mins a day......filled with psuedo PSE stuff.....it's a tick the box scenario.
aclockworkorangeOurs is 30 minutes - at 10.35. I was cynical at first - but now see it very positively. In my class, the first thing we did was all sit together. We then talked about the purpose of the new form time and then agreed our rights/responsibilities using the GIR/SHANARI framework. Examples of what are done: the class adopted some notice boards and are responsible for their upkeep and sharing the info with the community; tracking conversations that encourage a really meaningful dialogue; senior pupils helping juniors with homework: pupils having quality time to do some personal reading for enjoyment; seniors doing paired reading with less able readers; I'm mentoring a school refuser during this time; recording achievements that feed into S3 profiling; debates about what's in the news; numeracy investment challenge... I thought it was all going to be bullying and STI's - but not at all - it's just like another period - but with your regular people with real opportunities for mentoring, support, leadership etc - something our young people need more and more of, in our community anyway.

Anyone else (non-promoted teachers only need to answer please) involved in whole school curriculum development? I'm quite happy to update my own dept's progression/development but our working group (was volunteers first - they got none - then all staff told to choose from 4 WGs - met with obvious grumblings - then non-negotiable - in Hitler fashion, sorry to go off on a tangent again) have a list of things to "develop" re curriculum. Just looked back at our HMI report which states that SMT must develop curr. more. I am so stressed about all of this all of the time - Catmum, fancy a coffee and a big cake.............. ?
Couldn't agree more Airy. I was in S2 when guidance was first introduced and I remember thinking it was another name for sex education, as that was all we talked about. If I had a "personal" question I knew I could ask my French teacher as she knew me very well and was more approachable than our new Guidance teacher. My own 2 sons would have been better spending 2 periods a week having "proper" teaching rather than wasting time on stuff we talked to them about at home anyway.

It's excellent that you had no need of guidance when you were in school and that your sons are so well balanced that they will never need advice from anyone but you. Sadly, a number of children are not so fortunate...
I'm with you on this Clockwork... a chance to engage with pupils outwith the 'hothouse' of curricular/academic demands sounds like a positive experience for all.
I do appreciate, however, that some teachers find this a chore.
Kurtz, I'm not un-supporting of my guidance colleagues but they are so snowed under with paperwork these days, and the Guidance teachers I know complain about this change in remit, that the job is a stressful paper exercise, with long meetings away from the classroom and they are paid extra for doing this?

(by the way, your tone is offensive and if you read my previous post properly, you will note that I did not say that my sons only needed advice from me (their father sometimes got a say too )
Seriously, perhaps a parenting class should be offered as a compulsory subject, by Guidance teachers?

What precisely is meant by "tutor time"?
Is this simply the time during which a class is registered and key information given out? Around 15 minutes per day? Or is it a curriculum slot of around 50 minutes per week?
In my LA,it's the former,as registration classes have been renamed "tutorial" and we have been renamed tutors.It's pretty clear that more and more guidance stuff is creeping in. However,I suspect that sooner or later,they will become the latter. As for proper training? Probably not. As for being asked if you want to be a tutor? Not so much either.

No that's true. I've never wanted to be a substitute "mummy" for my pupils.
Dominie it is not something which should be lightly undertaken by teachers who simply want a break from the academic rigours of the normal curriculum.
With us it is called "Pupil Support", pupils divided into smallish groups (10 say) of the same age and gender. All teachers have to put together a "guidance" type of lesson for 40 mins per week - this is non-negotiable (edict from SMT) but most of us would rather be spending this period doing what we trained for i.e.teaching our chosen subject.
