KS1 scottish dance

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right forum. I teach in Kent, and I've got to teach scottish dancing to a mixed year 1/2 class next term-I was just wondering if anybody would be able to help me and if anyone has any ideas/links they can give me to help as have no knowledge of scottish dance at all?

Hi Sarah-lou,I'm a Scottish music teacher and feel I SHOULD be able to give you an answer but I can't! If I were you I'd get a book (Google "Scottish Country Dancing")buy the book (or get your school to)and then choose something like "Eightsome Reel" or "The Gay Gordons" or "The Canadian Barn Dance" - all of these are popular, common Scottish dances for groups of people.
They are similar to "The Grand Old Duke Of York" so I wouldn't worry too much about them being too difficult to teach.

As well as being a primary teacher, I'm a caller in a ceilidh band, and if you're looking for dances for beginners, I'd say steer well away from eightsome reels and gay gordons! (Joni, have you tried to teach the Grand Old duke of York to P1s?)
I'd go for a really easy dance such as the Flying Scotsman.
Start by getting something like
The Complete Ceilidh which has
1. A dance instruction booklet
with comprehensive explanations of all the ceilidh dances on the album.
2. The music CD
3. An additional instructional CD
which features the same music, however the voice of the 'caller' will guide you through all the dances.

Sorry Sarahlou, didn't read the 'year 1/2', so ignore my so-called help! archimedes's advice is what you need and her suggestions sound great.

I did a stint as a VTPE and taught Scottish Dance from P1 - P7. Virginia Reel is an easy favourite, and we also did partner dances such as Military Two Step and Canadian Barn Dance, but with the younger pupils holding hands, rather than trying the 'proper' holds.

Yes, that's the sort of thing I had in mind - not even Secondary 1/2 could manage the proper steps + holds!
