Request for help with interview for English position

  • post reply

    Hello one and all --

As the title says, I would like some advice for a forthcoming interview.

I have been away from mainstream teaching for five years, and from teaching in a special school for two years. This means that I am out of date with the latest Tick-the-Box words, and I would really value some help from people who have either been interviewed during the last year, or who have interviewed others for their department

I am depressingly bad at interviews (I wish they would just let you teach a class, to see what you are actually capable of...) and I am very, very keen to secure this job. I need to prepare, prepare and then prepare! I am just hoping that some of you might point me in the right direction.

With my thanks and good wishes.

You'd probably get a better response to this if you posted on the Probationer/ Unemployed teachers forum (and maybe you have... I haven't looked), but for my tuppence read up on the usual:

    CfE

    Raising attainment

    Dealing with difficult pupils

The new NQs (if you're secondary)

How you would help develop dept & contribute to school as a whole (there's almost always a Q about that)

    AifL

There should be a personal qualities question to start, but don't rely on that.  I've had the rug pulled out from under me before with an interviewer who dived straight in with the specifics of raising attainment in writing.  Get a list of scenarios you've experienced to back up your answers... interviewers prefer "I have" to "I would".

Sure there's lots I've missed but that's a starter for ten.

Thank you so, so much -- you've given me specific areas to study!

I will post the actual questions after the interview.

    With thanks.
