Supply in Coventry

  • post reply
Hi all, I'm after some advise. I have been teaching for 9 years and during this time I have had 2 children, 3 & 6, and changed jobs 3 times. 2 different schools in my first 2 years of teaching. I now only teach for 4 days and still get ppa time, which I am extremely grateful for as I then only teach 3 1/2 days. I am now feeling the pressure of data, results and trying to balance home and school life. Obviously trying to be the best mum and trying to be a good teacher and doing what I need to do for school but not just at school at home as well. Now the government advise for schools is the longer you have been teaching the better you should be. Which is understandable, but you can not always be an outstanding teacher with a busy home life as well. My husband is very understanding with regards to work load but he can see the pressures of my job are getting to me and obviously there is more to life than your job - even if it is teaching! What I would like to know is... Do I quit a job that is a constant source of work? What are the rates of pay for supply? Is it constant work? As people are always ill! Who is the best agency for work in Coventry? Advise for being a supply? Pros and cons for being a supply teacher over a permanent member of staff? Thanks

Hi, I am a Coventry Supply Teacher (Primary) and I find I get quite a lot of work (3 days a week, half of which is 1 and half days each week til july), however I am an NQT and I am quite cheap! Supply teacher rates in Coventry seem to range from £80-125 per day although some agencies pay a flat rate for all teachers, This includes holiday pay however. Work is generally not constant unless you secure longer term work and end/start of terms can be dire. It is often the luck of the draw/agency as I have friends on supply who can go weeks/months without work (secondary especially). As for recommending agencies I only work for one very small agency and I am not inclined to give their name, for fear of giving up some of my work-sorry! Supply is lovely and flexible and meeting different children and doing all types of lessons is wonderful, make sure your have resource pack ready and spare stationary with a memory stick full of goodies. However, as a teacher who is desperate for her own class I would chew my right arm off for a permanent post for its security and career development. Good luck in your decision :)

What's the situation with LA supply in Coventry?

I jsut think that all teachers should research the LA provision and register with them if possible as the first step in being a supply teacher.

Looked at this thread as I had all my schooling in Coventry.

No LA supply - it doesn't exist in Coventry. Supply is only through agencies and in schools that register you as a teacher. I've signed up to an agency and now it's just a matter of waiting time until I hear about work!
