I'd be into that. Just name a pub... esp Glasgow area. One meeting to see what the support for sharing/off-loading is like. I say Sammy Dows, Nithsdale Rd, a well nice bar and Friday/sat often has bands playing- me mate plays in one that gigs there regularly! Whaddyasay? :- ) No point in getting too heavy and serious about it. There's aye a sprig o relief in a good-hearted beef..... (sorry I teach English...)

Instead of meeting in the pub and drowning your sorrows - why not identify MSPs - especially SNP MSPs - and arrange for everyone to lobby their MSP regarding the Supply Teacher Sell-Out. http://iaingraymsp.co.uk/#/advice-surgeries/4531280701 http://www.paulmartinmsp.org.uk/surgerytimetable.php http://www.brucecrawfordmsp.org/page2.htm etc..etc You get the idea - but whoever you lobby, the plan would be to co-ordinate lobbying to one particular week (most surgeries appear to be on a Friday). Just 2 or 3 supply teachers appearing at every MSPs' surgery as part of a concerted plan and telling them first hand why this decision to cut wages for Supply Teachers is short sighted and bad news for their constituents' children might make them sit up, listen and take action. Going forward local councillors surgeries could be lobbied in a similar manner - but this would need to be quick before councils go into pre-election purdah.

    A great idea.  :)

Well done sos1 and clairbriggs1 for these ideas. It is time to get active as well as support each other. We need more people coming forward with ideas and plans. Please let us know if we can provide any help achieving them.

Just wondered if you were aware of CPD Step In who provide these events for supply staff already for free? http://ltsblogs.org.uk/cpdteam/2011/09/30/2031/ They had a conference for supply teachers last summer and can provide access to Glow for those having difficulty via Local Authorities: http://ltsblogs.org.uk/cpdteam/2009/12/18/cpdstepin/ I remember how left out I felt when I spent rather a lot of time on supply before this support was available and I don't think that its existence is widely publicised enough. Hope that some of you find it useful. I'd also highly recommend finding out where and when your local trade union meetings are so that you can go along for professional advice and support. You should be able to find out when these meetings are on via your trade union's website, if not then ring up Head Office. Might even be quite a good way to land a teaching post! My local meetings were always well attended by PTs and DHTs who decided who to get on on cover before jobs were advertised. I'd also like to mention TeachMeets as a source of local free grassroots CPD to keep you up-to-date and enthusiastic about developments. You would be encouraged to share your own experiences of what works well to maintain your confidence which is so important when trying to land a permanent position. Most universities now have regular events and are open to all involved in education. Find out when the next one is and make your way along: http://is.gd/nRzOJ1 :)
