Do's and Don't's

Hey thought I would start this thread and see if we could get a list of top things people should/ must do on placements and should not/ must not do on placement. I haven't started PGDE yet but I am starting a new placement for classroom experience before applying again so thought this would maybe give me some insight. Suppose I will start with a DO: Be Polite and Enthusiastic :D Sorry about formatting (google chrome) Emsbeth

A mistake that almost everyone makes at the start is to focus all of your attention on what is going on directly in front of you, and feeling like you always have to be interacting with the pupils.

Sometimes you can learn a lot more by taking a step back and looking at what is going on in the classroom as a whole.  How is the teacher is managing the classroom, how are the children are working and learning?

Do... try to build relationships. But don't... try to be their friend!

I take it you mean with the pupils or both staff and pupils?

Pupils. I wouldn't presume to tell another adult how to get on with workmates (although teachers can be a funny lot so maybe that might be helpful! In which case... watch what chair you sit in, and what mug you use. Our dept couldn't give two hoots who sits where, but I've been in other schools where it's a cardinal sin)

Where to start...! Be firm but fair and consistent. Always ask before you try anything new (courtesy). Don't rush out of the door to go home the minute the bell goes. Just a few! Jaime

Never start a sentence with, "If you don't stop that I'll..." Often, you've no clear idea of exactly what you will do and if you do it tends not to fit in with the school's behaviour policy!

    DO: Be positive

    DO: Give 100%

DO: Talk (to teaching staff and other students)

    DO: Use your initiative

DON'T: Be their friend (the pupils, the parents and to an extent the teachers - for a while)

    DON'T: Assume (anything)

DON'T: Try to seize control (find the right balance with initiative)

DON'T: Use apostrophes where they aren't required (sorry, OCD about this one!)

Don't take criticism personally. I have heard of students who get really upset when their class teacher suggests that they try doing something a different way. If they don't tell you, you can't learn and after all, it's not really criticism, it's help! Do keep in mind exactly why you are putting in all the effort. Placement is often really tiring (especially if you are working at the same time and have 2 children!) but I've found that it really helps to just go somewhere quiet, like your car and think about why you are doing it and what you like about it. A bit of positivity always helps.
