Literacy Planning - My Friend Walter

  • post reply
Hi, I was just wondering if anybody could offer any advice to help me with my literacy planning. I will be starting placement B of my PGCE in January and have been given My Friend Walter, (our topic is the Tudors), to work with. I have read the book and made an outline of possible activities. I had a great first placement and so want to keep this up in this one but I have no experience of Y5/6, so I am slightly stressing. I have been told to cover this in 2 weeks, which equates to 3 lessons of around an hour each a week, as they also have a 2 hour big write once a week. Anybody have any suggestions on how to successfully do this when I only have 1 copy of the book? Any hints and tips welcomed! Thanks.

Hi there, saw your cry for help re- planning for My Friend Walter.  Am also doing this book this term.  Wondered if you'd subsequently received any planning you might share.  Yours appreciatively, Jan.

Hi, You said you have some ideas already do these include things like writing letters to a character, writing a play script or another chapter/ending?

I have never read this but I love Michael Morpurgo's books.  You could always read a chapter to them and set one of these tasks.  Another one I like is a storyboard, low ability children love this as they can draw and only have a few words.

It's also a TV series (just researched) - if you can get hold of a copy the kids would love it!

You can also download the audio book from Amazon - if you can save this onto a USB or CD you could play it to the class.  That way all have access to the story.
