Aberdeen area teaching

  • post reply
Hi Folks, I'm thinking of moving to live in Aberdeen City or locality. Can anyone tell me what the jobs situation is like for Business Studies teachers at the minute. I have fultime employment in Ireland however my OH is living in Aberdeen for the past 2 years (we've been together for 5) and all the travelling is killing me. Also are there important dates to remember if I'm going to apply for jobs? Any paper work which I need to get? And finally...........where are jobs advertised? John

No idea what the job situation is in secondary.  Probably the best place to look for jobs-the local authority websites which will probably gie you links to myjobscotland.  You should be able to set up alerts.  Good Luck

Hi John, I have been living in Aberdeen for the past 5 years and can tell you that the current job situation isn't great. Very few jobs are advertised (you can find jobs on the city and shire websites and in TES) and even if you were lucky enough to get an interview you would more than likely find yourself up against a probationer who has been working at the school for the previous year, is a know quantity and cheaper to employ than you. I have also found that schools are biased in favour of those trained in Scotland (I did my degree in Aberdeen but trained in England) and it is for these reasons that I have been working at a private school. I have been told that next year my full time hours will be reduced to 2 days/week max due to budget cuts. I've been looking for wok since January and teach History and only 2 jobs have been advertised (Jobs are advertised in TES, and on the council websites, and occasionally in local papers (press and journal and evening express) 1 part time and one full time in the Aberdeen/ shire area. I know the situation is very similar for English and Maths but am not sure about business studies. Supply teaching is easier to get than it was but that is only due to a recent big pay reduction. Due to the situation with jobs I have decided to move away. Aberdeen is a miserable city to be poor in as everything is so expensive. Perhaps your OH could find work somewhere you could both get a job or else you could take up golf! Sorry to be so miserable. Hope you find something. Clare
